Cassandra Story: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
delriosong This review contains spoilers Les Misérables is Victor Hugo's classic tale of nobility and self-sacrifice that will have one questioning what man owes society and what society owes man, especially in terms of justice, and finally, what men owe each other. This film is from 1998 and was directed by Billie August. It stars Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush, and Uma Thurman. With source material of this nature one expects a lot and this doesn't disappoint in any way. Les Misérables is a large film that tells a large, decades -long story.Let's just break this film down by the numbers and let the chips fall where they may: A) Plot -- the story of Jean Valjean and his struggle to live free is a timeless classic -- 10 B) Characters -- the Characters are fully realized, well-motivate and very believable -- 10 C) Acting -- Liam Neeson and Uma Thurman give excellent performances and none are lacking -- 8 D) Script -- a very good adaptation which moves the story forward well while providing plenty of detail and background -- 8 E) Direction -- interesting and epic shot selection helped convey the scope of the story -- 8 F) Cinematography -- beautifully and artistically shot -- 9 G) Editing -- conventional editing techniques aided the narrative and cinematography/shot selection -- 8 H) Production Design -- Seemed very much like the period with lots of attention to detail -- 8 I) Costume Design -- Realistic but boring, it might have been preferable to have stylized costumes with a little more to look at -- 6 J) Stunts -- Could have done a little more -- 6 K) Special & Visual Effects -- The armed fighting was too short and featured a lack of intensity that additional special effects could have aided -- 5 L) Music -- sweeping in scope, like the film --8 M) Sound -- strong and clear -- 8 N) Entertainment Value -- 9 Average 7.928, call it an 8. Pop some corn, melt some butter and enjoy. This film features violence from civil unrest with the deaths of many including a child, violence against a woman and adult themes. It is rated PG-13.
mauricio-madrid again,Les Miserables was a huge book, and it is very hard to adapt, and i get it, things have to be changed, but, 30 minutes wouldn't have hurt it,and with that i mean, it would have been more emotive show Jean Valjean's death, not just end it with Javert's suicide.Well, at the end this movie it's a great movie that, if it is not close to the story events, at the end it is to the novel's atmosphere. The characters are played really well, Geoffrey Rush Kills it as Javert, playing him perfectly, Liam Neeson was Great as Valjean, Claire Danes did a great addition to Cosette's Character, making her stronger. The script is well articulated, The photography is beautiful and the acting is terrific.this is one of the best adaptations of Victor Hugo's Novel.
juneebuggy I really enjoyed this version of Les Miserables, first-rate cast and nicely interpreted story. It was admittedly a little slow in parts and I never felt the (any) love between Jean Valjean and Fantine. Wasn't their love affair supposed to be all-consuming because it was portrayed as pretty bland here.Geoffrey Rush is very good as Javert though (I was really hating on him) and his scenes with Liam Neeson are excellent. I did get pretty wrapped up in this epic story and I can see now why it keeps getting remade over and over again, it is just so good leaving quite the emotional impact. 01/13
g-bodyl Bille August's Les Miserables is a decent, somewhat faithful adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel set in 1800's France. This movie, hands-down, is acted extremely well and it had great characterization. What I truly missed in this film is the music. Even if it was one or two songs, I would have loved to hear what made the Broadway adaptation of this book a hit. This film is about a convict, Jean Valjean who served 19 years in prison. After his release, he becomes a mayor for this one town. He meets the ailing Fantine and he promises her that he will look after her daughter, Cosette despite being on the run from the persistent Inspector Javert. As I mentioned previously, this film is extremely well-acted. Liam Neeson and especially Geoffrey Rush were respectable in their roles. Rush makes a great villain. Claire Danes makes a very convincing Cosette as well.Overall, this is a pretty good history lesson based off France's rebellion in 1832. This movie has some slow moments, but the great acting takes care if that with no problems. I also wished that there were some songs here. I rate this film 8/10.
