tao902 Jim returns home to his family, who live in a white, working class, American small town in Indiana. He originally left home to become a successful writer in New York and has returned after failing. Jim gradually becomes closer to the family that he originally wanted to escape (an over protective mother, a disenchanted father, a divorced brother who tries to commit suicide). He begins a relationship with a local single mother who shows him respect that he didn't expect. Despite having no big dramatic moments the film holds your attention.A low key, good natured, dark humoured comedy.
djoshtodd Casey Affleck is really good in this movie. He is a real natural actor. This is a low budget prize of a movie. (Which is why I love it) It is cast well with a myriad of character actors you will all know. I won't tell you about this movie too much, because you just need to see it. It is funny and low-key. The plot & scenes change frequently, so you don't get bored watching this movie. Set in Indiana, the film reeks of middle-America the uglier towns on the country, the dope weather, a world with low ceilings and very few windows. The kind of world a young slacker or aspiring dude would leave because there are no opportunities. The way out is by bus, which Jim is supposed to take but somehow doesn't take at the film's end, for reason I can't remember. But worth watching it again. Peace
Reveriii I thought it was a beautiful movie. Casey Afflect is a pleasure and joy to watch. Great young actor. The story was simply touching. I recommend it for only adults though. The content would be difficult for a younger child to understand. It's not a movie for young children not because it is based on vulgarity, but on adult issues and emotional struggles. I commend Casey, and Liv for taking the roles. They both did exceptionally beautiful jobs. Both brought tenderness and life to a very complex and difficult story to portray. Someone said Casey mentioned he does not enjoy acting. Even if he doesn't, he is truly gifted in this area and is a moving actor. He ranks up there with Joaquin Phonenix and Leonardo DeCaprio in my book. I hope he continues to deliver us more performances. He is my favorite in all Hollywood.
wrlang Lonesome Jim is kind of like a romantic dark comedy about a dysfunctional family whose two boys are total losers. Both boys around 30, living at home, with absolutely nothing going for them. I live in the Midwest and I can't name one family like this. I picked it up because I kind of like Buscemi acting humor. Now I realize I need to have a counteracting agent to that humor to make it work. The acting and camera work and editing was fine. The first 15 minutes got you set, and the last 15 minutes helped prevent the film from being totally depressing Jerry Springer trailer trash type of story. The female members of my family were begging me to turn it off, but I prevailed under the premise that there had to be a turning point near the end, and we watched the entire movie. The male family members, as expected, simply walked out after the first 30 minutes.
