Good start, but then it gets ruined

It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.

There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes

It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review

I just watched this movie which was about a girl, American, working in England as an assistant at Vogue. Her career was sort of a side issue to all the antics going on with her love life and that of her gay roommate. I thought Brittany Murphy was charming in the part she played as "Jacks", a wannabe matchmaker for her gay room mate. What makes it comical is she matches up the new photographer's assistant assuming he is gay with her roommate. It is a comedy of errors and mistaken love attachments. There were parts I burst out laughing. It isn't plausible to me for real life but it was very entertaining. The photographer's assistant, Paolo, is from Argentina and they want to deport him just as his career takes off after the main photographer walks out on a shoot because he gets in a verbal squabble with Paolo and "Jacks". Paolo takes over the shoot and his photographs are published. In the meantime, she breaks up with her boyfriend and he is jealous of Paolo even though Jacks thinks he is gay, but her room mate and her boyfriend know differently. He reports him as an illegal alien and he is being deported. Jacks still doesn't know he is not gay and suggests they marry to keep him in the country. At the court wedding he admits he isn't gay and he loves her. She walks out feeling betrayed and he takes off to Argentina. She recovers and tries to catch him and misses the flight and subsequently takes another flight to Argentina. The room mate writes a screenplay on their life which is changed for the big screen with other actors playing them in a movie which they view at the end. It shows Gwenneth Paltrow meeting Paolo at the airport being played by Orlando Bloom and she confesses her love and they kiss. In the mean time it shifts back to the real characters watching a screening of the film and everyone leaves with a very pregnant Jacks. They all live happily ever after. There are other side stories with the gay roommate and some of their friends, but this is the basis of the movie. It is light and funny and I loved this movie. It is really sad that Brittany Murphy passed away because I think she was a really versatile actress and will be missed. The moral was you choose love and love is a chance one takes, it's a leap of faith.

Simply put, this is one of the WORST MOVIES I've ever seen. I am a big movie lover & I especially enjoy romantic comedies. In fact I love romantic comedies so much that I cut them a huge amount of slack. I also usually like Brittany Murphy. But this excruciating piece of garbage is so bad I'm hard pressed to think of a worse movie. I don't believe for a minute that all the positive reviews posted here by supposed viewers are all real. There's just no way this dreadful, tedious, completely unfunny film entertained more than a handful of strange people. (And I can't imagine who those people would be.) Just take a look at the professional film reviews for this filmed disaster & you'll see only bad reviews. I wouldn't even recommend this ghastly thing to people who enjoy watching & making fun of really bad movies. "Love and Other Disasters" has absolutely no redeeming value whatsoever! Avoid it like the plague!

There's a dialog introducing the Argentinean character that says he was found at Ipanema Beach! For me, as a Brazilian, it is almost an offense. If the writer was American I would understand it because they normally don't know anything about other countries. When I was young I studied in New York and it was very frequent for me to have to answer questions such as "Are there snakes in the streets of São Paulo?" Or "Is Buenos Aires the capital of Brazil?" I hope that this sort of thing doesn't happen anymore. We are living in an instant communications era! Today's films should have better revisers concerned with details about geography, politics and general knowledge to avoid incorrect information.

If you're looking for a pleasant, upbeat innocent romantic comedy - this will fit the bill. The tone, dialog, goof-ball misinterpretations and even rich colors are reminiscent of the 1950s. But - it's made for a modern audience too. For instance, we see Brittany Murphy rolling around multiple times virtually nude (won't have seen that 50 years ago!), we also have her surrounding herself with gay men (who are also looking for love) - and to boot, she shares a room with a gay man. This is a fun movie and something is always happening. Murphy plays an "assistant" at a fashion magazine and tries to play matchmaker for her gay roommate. What she doesn't know is that one of the potential beaus is actually straight and really interested in her ... and the story progresses from there.Brittany Murphy is at the center of the story. She's got her hair dyed black and has a distinctive, glamorous Spanish image. She puts in a strong performance as a kind-hearted but romantically averse do-gooder. There are more than a few laugh-out loud moments here, which makes it a wonderfully watchable movie.
