Breakinger A Brilliant Conflict
Stephan Hammond It is an exhilarating, distressing, funny and profound film, with one of the more memorable film scores in years,
Phillipa Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
Adam Foidart If "Agent K" from "Men in Black" had to go undercover by himself with some cheerleaders that needed to be protected at all costs you would get "Man of the House". Maybe I'm simply losing my mind because of too many bad movies, but I found Tommy Lee Jones to be very funny in what is otherwise an average comedy. Thankfully, it's like the movie knows it's just a couple of bad jokes from turning into total trash so it barely focuses on the cheerleaders that need to be protected, instead of focusing on the overall dynamics between the girls and their protector. It may not be a very good film, but it's entertaining while it lasts and it has a few twists you won't see coming, making it a fun, if forgettable comedy (it really could have used some aliens to spice it up). (On DVD, July 20, 2012)
michaelhirakida I kept this quiet for a while. But I feel there are way too many serious gritty angry films that are plaguing the auditoriums in many big theaters. What happened to the fantasy? The Wisdom? The Light nature of films that happened back in the day? Before the gritty realism drama movies came along, we had movies like Man of The House. Critically panned and a flop at the box office, it is highly underrated. This is a good example of movies with a light heart before all these dang furious movies came out in the 10's. Plot? Texas Ranger Roland Sharp tries to protect Rebellious Teenage Cheerleaders at a University after they witness the murder of a man. At first they don't get along and Sharp sets rules in the house they live in. But soon enough they find themselves liking this person. But are they really safe with him? When I was first watching it, I was like "Well, These cheerleaders are going to be super dumb." They kind of made them dumb in the beginning! But they actually turned out to be smart realistic teenage cheerleaders. That made me surprised. I really enjoyed the company of these five cheerleaders and they made me laugh.Tommy Lee Jones is also awesome in this movie too! He has some really funny stuff to do in the movie including a scene with handcuffs! I actually do like this film a lot because not only is it smart in most cases, but it has a really good script, a great cast and some really funny scenes! Only complaint I have though is that it is a bit bloody in some places even though it's a PG-13. But this film was really well made! I wish more films were like this now. But I guess we will have to settle with our humorous superhero films for now.89/100 B+
Kristine I didn't know what to expect with Man of the House, didn't know if it was going to be good or bad. But I figured when I was renting movies, what the heck? Tommy Lee Jones is an awesome actor and I would be interested in seeing him in a comedy, even a cheesy one if it was that. While this certainly wasn't the comedy of 2005, it was a good and fun one that I'm sure you'll get a couple of laughs out of it. The cheerleaders teaching the ranger how to calm down and relax was cute, and the ranger trying to restrain them from going out and having a social life was the best! Roland Sharp is a stick to the book type of ranger in Texas. He's a hard working man who has lost his wife in a nasty divorce and is also loosing his daughter by never listening to her or being with her. But when 5 ditzy girlie-girl cheerleaders witness a case breaking murder, Roland must protect their lives. They must all live in a house together, but that's gonna be hard considering how different they are. But they end up teaching each other when to stay serious and when to lighten up a bit.Man of the House was a good fun comedy that deserves a look if you are interested in mindless entertainment. Tommy and Cedric were great in the film and worked so well together. Tommy was just great where I have never seen him in a comedy, so it was fun to see him just let go and see how versatile he could get with his career. Even though he's still has a serious role, he lets loose in the film and looked like he had fun with everyone. So, just let go with the stress, and relax with this film, you might find yourself enjoying it.6/10
disdressed12 answer-they all move faster than this movie.man, this thing is a real coma inducing yawner.the rating is higher than i think it should be(5.3/10).if you're expecting to laugh, you can forget about it.this movie has very little going for it.i can only come up with two positives.one is Anne Archer, who is still a stunner at age 57 in 2005,when this movie was released.the other positive is that there were a couple good songs.other than that,it's painful experience and a loss of 100 minutes of life, which will not come back.i didn't think this would be a great movie, but i thought it might be decent.i found it hard to actually finish watching, but i stuck with it.hopefully i can convince others not to waste their precious time.for me, "Man of the House" is a 3/10
