Best movie of this year hands down!
KnotStronger
This is a must-see and one of the best documentaries - and films - of this year.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.

Mars Attacks is not a great film. It's all right, but sad to say some of the comedy
doesn't quite come off. But this is one of those films where if you were lucky
enough to get cast in it you got the opportunityto give out with some shtick or
overact outrageously. Jack Nicholson got to do it twice as he was cast in two
different roles, as president of the United States and as a Las Vegas operator.Nicholson is served better presidentially. Can you imagine Jack Nicholson in that
familiar nasal twang trying to reassure the nation even after the aliens have
blown up Congress. It's what people remember best from the film.Pierce Brosnan is cast as the ever calm scientist who knows his field will provide the answers. All that's left of him is sheer intellect. My favorite is Martin Short who gets a Martian through White House security.
He's Nicholson's press secretary and he sneaks a disguised Martian past White
House security. Poor Short thinks he's getting a little something something
and is he ever surprised.I also Paul Winfield who is modeled on General Colin Powell as the emissary
President Nicholson sends to greet the Martians on the Nevada desert where
they've landed. He's got a nice running rivalry with Rod Steiger who is a general along the lines of Buck Turgidson from Dr. Strangelove. The whole component doesn't quite gel. But lots of funny bits should keep the
viewer interested. Can you imagine the current president trying to reassure the public after an
alien invasion. Not non-Americans, real aliens.

I remember when I was about 8 years old, I was spending the night at my Grandma's house. We were watching TV, and this was on. It gave me the worst nightmares I've had at that age. Re-watching it nearly 8 years later, it's a fairly decent mockery of alien invasion movies. It doesn't take itself too seriously, the action is done pretty well, and it is just too funny. It's weird seeing how age changes the genre from Horror to Comedy. Only complaints is there isn't much character development, and the solution is kinda stupid.

Earth is invaded by Martians with unbeatable weapons and a cruel sense of humor. Mars Attacks! has a terrific cast of actors such as Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Pierce Brosnan, Michael J. Fox and more but pretty much half of them are wasted in roles that even tho their alright they either get killed of half way threw the film or just in the end with some stupid way. I mean Tom Jones did more than most of them, hell even the kids were better than the entire freaking Army. The special effects are a bit dated tho but we all know that's not the real issue. (5/10)

Okay, so what do you get when you take War of the Worlds, Earth vs the Flying Saucers, Independence Day, and combine that with the mind of the director of Ed Wood, Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands who grew up watching those types of movies? The result is Mars Attacks!, a sci- fi parody with an all-star cast; Jack Nicholson, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Danny DeVito, Jack Black, Paul Winfield, Annette Bening, Rod Steiger, Natalie Portman, Lisa Marie, Glenn Close, Martin Short, Michael J. Fox, and Jack Nicholson!!Oh yes, this movie has stars a-plenty! This movie has more stars on Earth than you see in space! This movie is one that you either love or hate. I love it! Though there are reasons why I rated it 9 stars rather than 10. One reason is because a lot of the characters I wanted to see live don't survive. Hell, one of my favourite characters dies very early on.If this was another movie, the dated CG would've made me dock another star. But for the type of movie it is and for the genre it's spoofing, the now-poor CG works. In the '50s and '60s alien invader films that this makes fun of, the effects were dated in 1996 (strings visible that hold up the saucers, aliens obviously people in suits, etc). As a result, the effects in here being dated now unintentionally harks back to the dated effects of the '50s and '60s.One very interesting scene is when one of the buildings in Vegas is destroyed. In real life, that building was actually scheduled to be demolished! Tim Burton got permission to film the demolition of the Landmark Hotel and Casino from multiple angles and it's demolition was used in the film so when you it destroyed in the movie, it was actually destroyed (though no one was actually inside.).My mom told me that she saw this in the theatre and that it was the most terrifying movie she'd ever seen. Goes to show that Mars Attacks! isn't for everyone. So if you like Tim Burton, alien invader films, sci-fi comedies or even all three, definitely give this film a watch. Also, keep an eye out for the meat packing tycoon from Ed Wood, one of Burton's earlier films. He plays an investor in this film too.
