I really wanted to like this movie. I feel terribly cynical trashing it, and that's why I'm giving it a middling 5. Actually, I'm giving it a 5 because there were some superb performances.

There isn't much to be said for "Dinosaur Valley" (aka "Cannibal Ferox 2") with the exception of some lovely young ladies who spend a good deal of the film naked and on the run. A plane carrying some truly oddball passengers, including the film's fossil-hunting hero Kevin and several scantily clad models, crashes in the Brazilian jungle. For those who survive, it is a fight to get back to civilization, through pirhanas, jungle animals, flesh-eating pigs, cannibals and a slaver who is running an illegal mining operation. The film is wildly overacted and the dialogue atrocious, but the location photography is noteworthy and the ladies are the kind all heterosexual men dream of. The film verges on camp, so you might as well laugh along with it. The gore quotient is so-so, the few special effects pathetic.

By the time I saw this, I had seen so many of these films I wasn't shocked anymore. But I still dug it.Plane crash into the jungle leads to escape through maneater country. The usual clichés happen. One by one folks get trapped and munched. About right for this fare. The suspense was there, but it never really took off. Unlike "Cannibal Holocaust" and/or "Make Them Die Slowly" this didn't hit the level of fear. But that might be due to my seeing it late so I can't really complain. The cast was the usual run of Euro-types. Sexy men and women garbed to emphasize the looks. The Maneaters themselves looked a little TOO clean though. I agree with some of the others. They should look like they lived in the jungle, not like other visitors. Not the best, but a good entry for the genre.

If you are looking for a stomach churning gore fest like the great Cannibal Ferox a.k.a. Make Them Die Slowly, then you will be disappointed with this film. It has it's fair share of gooey goodness, but compared to the majority of movies in this genre, it's quite tame. Massacre really has more in common with Raiders Of The Lost Ark, except with a lot more T and A, and much lower budget. The good- Massacre is very well shot and competently directed, and has aged well because of this. The women are smoking hot, and showed plenty of skin, even got a brief girl on girl scene in the vein of Ilsa. The action rarely stops, and I wasn't bored once. Finally what I enjoyed most about this film was leading man Michael Sopkiw, who makes a very likable hero, and had the talent to go on to do big things. Saddly things never worked out for him. Nonetheless he gets props from me, for his obvious talent. If you get the DVD, it has a new interview with Sopkiw, who talks in depth about the film, his career, and what he's doing now. The only negative is the lack of extreme gore, although it does outshine many of it's predecessors in other areas.

An anthropologist, Vietnam vet, his bitchy lush wife, scientist, his daughter, and two fashion models(??!?) on their way to dig up some fossils on Dinosuar island (there's no dinosaurs in the movie, don't worry, it's just a name) crash land in the midst of a jungle and must contend with various obstacles to their survival including cannibals, wild animals, and various other things. This movie is so goofily cheesy that I couldn't help but to enjoy it. Lots of gore as well as T&A (and some bush too) make this film go down so much easier. Add to that many quotable lines and you have a good bad movie. My Grade: C+
