Most undeservingly overhyped movie of all time??

A film with more than the usual spoiler issues. Talking about it in any detail feels akin to handing you a gift-wrapped present and saying, "I hope you like it -- It's a thriller about a diabolical secret experiment."

Because of hearing about this film for decades, it seemed like it was a Joan Crawford type drama, which is not my cup of tea. But after forcing myself to view it I was pleasantly surprised as it is a great film. And this movie in my opinion made me realize one thing. That it wasn't the actors acting in older movies that seemed corny, it was the screenplay writing, sort of the same thing like in "The Postman Always Rings Twice." These actors in the movie were superb. But every now and then the actor's would kinda say things too perfectly. It's like the screenplay writer's thought that we couldn't figure it out. I also went into the movie with a preconceived idea of who the killer was and was kinda surprised with the twists and turns, so that made it better as I was right, then wrong, then right. But this was my problem, anyone watching the movie not knowing any history of the movie won't have that problem.

Superb, classic drama. Excellent plot - clever murder plot mixed with sensitive, emotional human drama. Having seen the 2011 HBO miniseries first (and liked it a lot), much of the plot was familiar, but this did not detract from the impact of the movie.Great direction by Michael Curtiz, who also directed Casablanca (for which he won an Oscar), White Christmas, Yankee Doodle Dandy (Oscar nomination) and Captain Blood (Oscar nomination). Clever use of stories-within-scenes. Pacing is spot on.Joan Crawford is superb as Mildred Pierce. Good support from Zachary Scott, Jack Carson (especially) and Ann Blyth.Overall, even better than the 2011 miniseries. An understated classic.

Joan Crawford plays the title role, a mother who will do anything for her selfish daughter Veda, played by Ann Blyth. Mildred even goes into business, becoming a successful restaurant owner, but Veda is still ungrateful even as her mother has provided her opportunities in society.Jack Carson plays Wally Fay, a man Mildred manipulates; Zachary Scott is Monte Beragon, another who gets involved in a tragic love triangle of sorts with Crawford's and Blyth's characters. Eve Arden plays Ida Corwin, a friend of Mildred's who later becomes one of her employees, that gets to say some great sassy lines including "Personally, Veda's convinced me that alligators have the right idea. They eat their young."Eventually, the daughter gets herself in deep trouble and the mother's sacrifice is made even greater. Directed by Michael Curtiz, and based on the James M. Cain novel with a screenplay by Ranald MacDougall, this essential drama also features Bruce Bennett, Lee Patrick, Veda Ann Borg, and Butterfly McQueen (uncredited).Joan Crawford's Academy Award winning Best Actress performance on her first (!) of three nominations. Also Supporting Actress Oscar nominations for Arden (her only!) and Blyth (her only as well). The film, its B&W Cinematography, and MacDougall's (his only) screenplay were also nominated. Added to the National Film Registry in 1996.

This film made history for many reasons. The major reason was the fact that the main character was a woman and that she was successful and making money. This was not uncommon for the time period because of the war just ending and the men that had been drafted were just re-entering the work force. I am proud to say that the production staff did a good job on this film because I did not see the ending coming. The cinematography of the film was outstanding and the lighting especially helped convey the mood that the characters were trying to form. I would recommend this film to anyone who is interested in a different kind of movie that will keep you guessing long after it is finished.
