Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
Contentar Best movie of this year hands down!
Glucedee It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.
Gutsycurene Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.
meddlecore A young apprentice at the local mortuary is responsible for overseeing the dead bodies of potential ghosts and vampires. But, he gets a nasty surprise, when some of the bodies become re-animated and start to attack him. There's no reason to worry, however, because the priest and his buddy have got it covered with their occult kung fu skills. Now, they've been hired by a local millionaire, who wants to re-bury his father, in order to change his luck- because his business is failing.Turns out, his father ripped off the fortune teller that was giving him advice for his burial. And the fortune teller sought revenge by knowingly giving him wrong directions- essentially cursing his family line. The priest and his crew, are to oversee the extraction and re-burial of the coffin. But they can't rebury it in the same spot, because that spot is tainted. So they take the coffin back to the mortuary. However, at some point during the night, the vampire awakens and escapes...killing his son, turning him into a vampire as well. But the local officer arrests the priest- for challenging his intelligence (in front of his cousin, whom he loves)...saying he wants to avenge the death of his uncle. So the must priest get his two apprentices to do the dirty work for him. But, obviously, they fail...getting themselves poisoned by the vampire and bewitched by a ghost, in the process of trying to help.So they must break the priest out, and attempt to take on the vampire together. With hilarious, occult, kung fu, vampire slaying to ensue. This film is so damn cool. Cult as f*ck. Action packed. Absolutely hilarious. Filled with bad-ass kung fu styles that have an almost sci-fi element. And educational! Who knew you could prevent yourself from being detected by vampires, by holding your breath? Or that you can use sticky rice to burn and weaken them? Not me, anyways. But it has been duly noted and added to my repertoire of knowledge. This is definitely one of the best, most action packed, and entertaining vampire films I've ever seen. And it's hilarious. What more could you ask for?! Highly recommended.9.5 out of 10.
OllieSuave-007 I first saw this movie, Mr. Vampire, when I was about five or six years old. At that time, it was one of those ghost movies I tried to stay away from. I remembered that the first scene of the Vampire seen in his coffin after it was exhumed and another scene where his long, thin, sharp-nailed fingers stick out of the coffin frightened me a lot. Now, this movie is pretty tamed. However, seeing this movie when I am older reminds me that this film is a piece of cinema classic and brilliance.A solid plot about a Taoist Priest and his two disciples, trying to save the village from an old chief or officer who was resurrected into a hopping vampire. Adding to the suspense, one of the disciples gets injured and turns into a vampire himself while the other is seduced by a female ghost. All these plot elements flow smoothly and compliment each other well, making this an entertaining and intriguing feature. Ricky Gau did a great job directing and did not drag on the plot with pointless fillers, which are evident in many films made in Hong Kong.Actor Lam Ching Ying, formerly a member of actor Sammo Hung's stunt team, plays Master Gau, the powerful Taoist Priest ("Vampire Buster"), which would become Lam's signature role. He would reprise this "Vampire Buster" role in many vampire, ghost and fantasy movies that follow.Lam is joined by movie veterans Ricky Hui and Chin Siu-Ho, who play his hilarious disciples. The ghost is portrayed by Pauline Wang, who would go on to typecast this role in many other fantasy films featuring a restless ghost. Set in ancient China, the village and countryside sceneries are colorful and magnificent, alongside the cast members' beautiful costumes. Rounding up the great elements of this film is a wonderfully eerie and orchestral music score by Anders Nelsson.I believe Mr. Vampire is the ultimate and original film of the vampire/ghost film genre, preceding movies that represent what I think are some of the best work of Hong Kong Cinema.Grade A
AwesomeWolf Version: Cantonese, with English subtitles (by SBS) I borrowed this, and several other movies, from a friend a couple of months ago. Most of these movies I'd already seen, except for this. I can't think of why I hadn't seen it: It had been taped from SBS, it was an action / horror / comedy from Hong Kong, and it was awesome. The movie follows Master Gau (Ching-Ying Lam), a vampire hunter who discovers at a reburial that the corpse has turned into a vampire. Along with his two assistants, Chou (Siu-hou Chin) and Man Choi (Ricky Hui), Master Gau has to stop this vampire and any other demons, but Chou is being distracted by a succubus and Man Choi is turning into a vampire.OK, I'll admit that the plot was rather confusing. The above is how I understood it, but who needs a plot when you have vampires, and kung-fu, and evil lady-demons who detach their own head for no apparent reason? I know I don't. Awesome. The martial-arts scenes are the best parts of the movie, but the horror / comedy sequences are still entertaining. Anyone interested in kung-fu movies should check this out for Siu-hou Chin's performance alone. The guy is incredible, and puts on some great fights.9/10 - Anyone who is fan of Hong Kong action movies should check it out.
andrew dyer this is another great movie from the east. there is kung-fu there is horror there is great performances by a group of actors who are sometimes underrated. the movie is full of the typical humour expected from the jackie chan movies like the main character thinking the daughter of a millionaire is a hooker and when he questions her comes to believe she is sex mad and prostituting herself since her childhood and gets a slap! for his bother or even the policeman getting cutie branded on his chest during a fight with his uncle who became a vampire and tried to bite him. or a vampire who cant hop up the stairs or the even funnier resteraunt scene were never having had an western breakfast two men pouring milk and sugar onto their custard tarts. but watch it for yourself a i guarantee you'll love it.just do yourself a favour watch the Cantonese language version watching oriental movies dubbed just lacks something trust me you'll get used to subtitles and the language.
