Senteur As somebody who had not heard any of this before, it became a curious phenomenon to sit and watch a film and slowly have the realities begin to click into place.
Bessie Smyth Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
Bob This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.
Filipe Neto In this film, two abnormal students decide to perpetrate the perfect crime, but things start to go wrong when an experienced detective mistrusts them. We have seen similar things before, the film is not exactly original in the subject it addresses, being clearly inspired by the crime committed by Leopold and Loeb, decades earlier. The movie never hides anything. From the beginning, we know almost everything that will happen and who the killer is. So there is no secret or mystery and it spoils the movie a lot. The relationship between the two boys is quite dysfunctional and even conveys the idea of a certain latent homosexuality between them. To make matters worse, they both correspond to two detestable juvenile stereotypes (one is the typical impersonal nerd, the other is the rich, idiot guy). In turn, the detective is the typical "macho girl".The actors are fairly decent in their work. Sandra Bullock is very competent and does a fine work. Ryan Gosling is good and gives his character an almost magnetic charisma in a deeply disturbing interpretation. Michael Pitt is not far behind in a clearly crazy character.Overall, it's a decent movie, but it loses a lot for the absence of mystery and for giving of tray everything that the public should wait to discover.
Nikos M It was supposed to be the perfect murder...unfortunately it was not...I was expecting to be the perfect murder...anyway the film begins with the two boys planning the "perfect murder" and it goes well until super detective{Sandra bullock} suspects them...why?she founds the ''right suspect'' all the clues was logically connected...but no,she knows about the boys and decides to chase them...and how the police ignore all the clues about the main suspect?the case was supposed to be closed but again super detective is on duty...I just wondering why Justin didn't do anything when he threw up and just left...he was scared?yes,he was disgusted?yes but he was very smart to do something like this...I just don't understand it...and how the lamb found Justin's DNA from the puke...the chances was about 1\1000 i guess....anyway the plot has many gaps and it is very predictable...However the chemistry of two boys is pretty good and i enjoyed it...Sandra bullock is good too but i think over the top...I just expected to see the perfect murder, thats all...i had more expectations from this film.I give it a 5/10
rbrb This film is almost totally ruined by the way the story is dominated by the neurotic behavior of the lead actress. She is a senior police officer investigating a horrific murder where the 2 suspects are a couple of clever gay students who commit a murder for fun and are trying to get away with the perfect crime. By virtue of very strong performances of the two gays this story would be compelling had it been left on its own. But -no- the film makers have to make the major plot the lunatic mixed up nympho-maniac aforesaid police woman. Also instead of being brave enough to betray the gays for what they are the movie brings in some f-a-g hag to have sex with both the gays.....
bkoganbing Murder By Numbers has detectives Sandra Bullock and Ben Chaplin assigned to the murder of a young woman who was blitz attacked by an intruder in her home. Bullock gets the right scent on things, but the 'facts' keep getting in her way. This updating of the Leopold/Loeb story that has seen such films as Rope and Compulsion inspired by that famous true thrill kill story has as its protagonists Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt. I think that the author gives us a big hint to the characters of these two right in the beginning when we see Pitt reading a paper he's written for a class about Nietschean superman philosophy and Gosling just pretending to be asleep in class. The homoerotic tension crackles off the scene with Gosling and Pitt. They are truly into each other until Agnes Bruckner enters their lives. After that it's every bisexual for himself. These two go far beyond Loeb and Leopold. Not only do they randomly pick some poor women for their kill experiment, but Pitt is a science wiz and he manufactures the forensic evidence that throws suspicion on Chris Penn the school janitor. Unfortunately Gosling really rubs her the wrong way when he's questioned. He's the kind of rich kid you love to take down. But speaking of rubbing the wrong way, Bullock is rubbing her own superiors just that way. Part of it is male chauvinism, part of it is they don't want to ruffle the feathers of Gosling's father who's the richest guy in town. Bullock and Gosling dominate the film. Her with her dogged determination to take down the rich kid and him with a terrifying charisma that just about everyone is taken with. Loeb and Leopold never had problems like these.
