Spoonixel Amateur movie with Big budget
Lollivan It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
Sameer Callahan It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
Myron Clemons A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
vishaal811 No Smoking is made with good intentions and the filmmaker is desperately trying to do something completely out of the box in this movie. However, the movie which has several themes such as surrealism, fantasies and dream sequences, makes the viewer completely distant from the underlying meaning of it all. It is frustrating to watch a movie and not comprehend the whole point of the story. The cinematography is good and John Abraham does a decent job in the lead role. The movie seems to be inspired by Mulholland Drive which is another movie that can drive the viewer insane with its ambiguous storyline. Even though Anurag Kashyap must be praised for trying to make experimental movies, the movie must give the viewer some clue as to what the truth is. The movie will be frustrating and disappointing for most of the people. Hence, stay away from it unless you are looking for something completely different from the usual crap.
shiveshranjan7 If you think of 100 years of Hindi film industry you will find that very few movies were made not just to entertain or give you message but to make you think beyond your intelligence level. Yes, I used 'intelligence' because in the current scenario, the audience is victimized by spoon-feeding storytelling culture. 'No smoking' breaks this barrier, gives the audience to float among boxes of puzzles and prompts them to think twice before smoking. When I heard about this movie I thought it would be another documentary kind of treatment narrated by director Anurag Kashyap, just like his previous movie 'Black Friday' and of course, reviews were all confusing. But unexpectedly, Film bound me till the end with certain clues to give the final message. Only thing I had to do was to open my mind at the start and accept the confusing/odd scenario for few minutes so that I could connect the dots, later during the movie. The film is not for the people who just seek for entertainment.Recently, I was reading few reviews of 'No Smoking' which was published on the year of its release and after watching movie, on the recommendation of my colleague, I was thinking of those reviewer who actually bashed the movie how they could be so rude. If they couldn't understand the metaphors and plots how they could simply call it 'Dumb' without thinking twice? Yes, you heard it right, 'Dumb'.I am not here to criticize those reviewers for making such a non- sense statement; because after all, review is nothing but the opinion of an individual and opinion can be anything.Storyline: In the film, K (John Abraham) was a businessman who had a habit of smoking and he was very proud of it. He was of bossy nature and he didn't want anyone to take over his decision. Film really started when his wife Anjali (Ayesha Takia) threatened him to leave him forever for not quitting smoking. He went to the Guru Ghantal Baba Bengali Sialdah Wale (Paresh Rawal) for rehabilitation program. Guruji forced him to sign the contract for the program after which he could do anything but smoking. If he does then his family would pay the price. From this point, film adds many layers to the story by raveling the bizarre secrets and makes K confused between reality and dreams until the climax.Story: With respect to Hindi film standard, I can understand that the story was much more complex than normal tale and it was hard to understand. Even after the last scene, for the next 20-30 minutes, you will try to decipher the metaphoric scenes like Ram-Shyam-Balram (people with same faces), live telecast of K's life on TV, Bathtub in dream sequence, one rupee debt etc. I was really amazed to see the linear narration style of the most illustrated topic 'Smoking'. This might be made as another documentary but added plot of rehabilitation center with some of extraordinary incidents brightened the concept and lifted the story to the whole new level.Acting: I am not much fan of John's Acting but this role really suited his personality (Charming, well built and rich guy) and he delivered it with brilliance. Paresh Rawal is one of finest actor in this industry. He did Guruji's role with his smooth dialogue delivery and majestic screen presence. Ayesha Takia played as K's wife/secretary and she picked it up so easy. Ranvir Shorey is one of the most underrated actor. From this movie, he showed how much potential he has. He was the man who lives in constant fright of knowing some secrets and he delivered it very sincerely.Directing: Everyone started to agree to the fact that Anurag Kashyap has a potential to become the greatest director after watching Dev- D, Gulal and Gangs of Wasseypur. But for me, he gave this glimpse from 'No Smoking' which came way early in 2007. He picked up a very crucial topic of smoking, wrote it with brilliant narration and directed in his very unique style. If you could find first 15 minutes interesting then I bet you won't leave your seat until the end. Movie never loses its pace and music & cinematography gives the extra wings to it. None of the shots are waste to watch.Final Words: If you are smoker and want to quit, watch this movie! Also if you haven't watched it yet by thinking that it could be life journey or documentary kind of boring tale, you are mistaken; actually you will be in for a thrilling show!
Chrysanthepop Inspired by movies made by auteurs like Kaufman, Lynch etc, Anurag Kashyap makes 'No Smoking'. Given the premise, which is very interesting, one would expect something stunning, especially since Kashyap has assumed director's seat. However, 'No Smoking' fails to meet up expectations. Kashyap's style of making, which is inspired by Kaufman's works, is impressive on the technical side. The editing, cinematography, lighting and special effects are very well done. Vishal Bhardwaj's score is terrific. Kashyap also succeeds in creating a tense and claustrophobic atmosphere but the main problem's are with the script and performances. The basic skeleton of the story treads the path of a traditional thriller where the writers later added elements of surrealism and symbolism. At the same time Kashyap tries to tackle too many themes but they all end up half-baked. John Abraham turns up with a truly abysmal performance. He is wooden to the core and wears one expression almost through the entire film. While Paresh Rawal's Baba Bangali lacks mystery and intrigue. Rawal repeats his hyperactive-chatterbox act. Ayesha Takia isn't given much scope. With movies like 'Black Friday', Anurag Kashyap has proved to be a more than capable film director. However, 'No Smoking' does not meet up with the standards.
mrinaldutta90 for the past one year i have been avoiding Hindi movies..mainly for the reason that these movies have failed to strike a chord neither with my heart nor with my brain...but this movie brings my faith right back into Hindi...i have read many negative reviews about this movie, but i somehow felt that the movie must have something in it to provoke such a reaction,so i finally saw it to find out...yes this is one of the movies in which you will think u have solved the puzzle and the next moment u will be disappointed that this is not the correct solution, and you will be made to think again... and yes this movie has many possible interpretations, this is the most brilliant thing about this movie....this is a David lynch kind of a movie, but it somehow seems to have really struck a chord even more than lynch movies...the acting was absolutely perfect, they did not overact, they did not underact!Paresh Rawal's character was very strong....man this person can act,you will listen to him, even if you don't understand a single word of what he is speaking! then there ...another gem of a performance, and john Abraham....no one could have done the role better except may be Christian bale or tom cruise..he has that suave look and narcissist approach which was needed for the role!the ambiance created by the director..the BM music, the brilliant camera angles, the creation of those really dark and mysterious situations and places, the plot(or the lack of it,which was absolutely perfect, the presence of a solid plot would have spoiled the experience) ,the screenplay(brilliantly done, specially the dreams)...the premise of the movie is 'smoking'..the protagonist K,is a chain smoker and his wife leaves him for that, then provoked by two of his friends he joins a organization to leave his smoking...but then his suffering starts..now i wont move any further...because i will be spilling spoilers!! it provokes a deep anti-smoking sentiment in the viewer....if this movie had been promoted properly it would have made it to the IMDb 250....
