This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

I watched OK Kanmani (admittedly a few years late as I usually do), as far as possible unbiased by in-theater experiences, post-theater discussions on the songs / the hotness factor of the stars and of the dance numbers, reputation of the director etc. I get what Mani Ratnam is trying to portray. It just wasn't done with the care it takes.OK Kanmani attempts to show an India developed in its mindset towards relationships: one in which the youth are open to non-marital love and are encouraged in their desires by equally open-minded adults. At first, it feels like a fresh change - the female lead (played by Nithya Menon) is brash and blunt and doesn't care what people think. But it eventually reveals itself to be just a hoax: she is as choiceless as most female characters in the stereotypical Indian film. She is the first to betray her true emotions; storming and raging when he leaves for a couple of days with no explanation offered save for his usual chirpiness and boyish cheerfulness. She is "allowed" by him to go off to Paris and pursue her career; if she marries him in the end. They eventually do get married; despite every indication that they were against the very concept.Maybe Kollywood will truly rise up and give female characters a true "lead" role in the future. But OK Kanmani should be remembered as one which failed to hit that mark. It should only be remembered as male chauvinism passing off for feminism.

This Review Might Contain SpoilersThis review is my perspective of the film OK Kanmani (2015)positives: 1) the message of film is beautiful and relevant for most of the youth of today who are confused about true love, it might help them to be guided in their individual journey of love. a) love is pure it cannot be played with b) multiple relationships give you peace which is transient not permanent c) Sex,casual dating etc... are definitely not what LOVE actually is d)Love is a bliss,Love is caring for each other, staying strong with each other through all thick and thins e)Marriage is a Marriage, Marriage has its own charm and sweetness,it is near impossible for any other thing to replace this beautiful institution f) you don't need yourself to go through multiple relationships and break ups to ultimately settle down with the one you feel is correct for you. g)just wait for the right time, the supreme power will definitely gift you your right soulmate, the ONLY ONE for you. h) while choosing between your career and LOVE,you don't need to sacrifice either one of them , you can keep both by finding the right way. i)the love story of Bhavani Aunty and Ganpathy Uncle is the ideal form of love, which can be made a thing to be followed by the ones who are seeking the right way to love the other person. j)At last the Bhavani- Ganpathy love story wins over Adi-Tara's non- committal love story k) Adi and Tara realise that true love is found in stability, in friendship and care2) The Mental Manadil Song is the biggest attraction of this film. This song is a crowd-puller.Rest of the songs are good to be heard in the theatre, and go according to the situations present the film. BACKGROUND SCORE: its mellifluous, the Bhavamulona Dubstep Bgm is the best, I wish it could have been released as a full-fledged song.3) Cinematography is good, especially in the trailer of this film, where the local trains are shown in a fast moving way.4) Nithya And Dulquer are too good looking, and their acting is exactly natural and perfect, they look good together, their pairing is always fresh. They are the real important assets of the film apart from the Mental Manadhil and Kaara Attaakaara song5) the locations of Ahemadabad are good. 6) Nithya's costumes are ethnic and cool at the same time 7) This film has some good scenes. We are saved ,as there are no love making scenes shown openly or vulgar kissing scenes as suchNegatives:1) The film has a kind of screenplay which bores you from the word GO, From the opening credits to the end credits, the film is uninteresting. The screenplay does not involve you in the film, you do not travel emotionally with the journey of the lead characters in the film.Yes "something is happening on screen ", this is the feeling I got while watching the film.2) a scene in the film is not realistic, the scene where Adi-Tara talking a bit loudly on phones in the church where someone's marriage is going on,in reality you don't need to talk on the phones, either of the one can go and sit next to the other one if they really want to talk , in this way the silence of that place might not get disturbed.3) the lead characters are in merry making mood half of the time and laugh too much which is irritating and rest of the time they are so serious which is also irritating. jovial and serious moods of the leads should have been shown in such a balanced way that we would have understood their emotions.4) Mental Manadhil is edited not very nicely in the film. 5) sets are not attractive, they are okay 6) the film doesn't explore any other areas except the chemistry of the new age couple in the film, the story of Adi's family (dropping in and they mistake Tara to be Ganpathy's niece) is half-baked 7) they could have made a good family entertainer with the concept of living-in,it serves as neither a pure-realistic film nor a entertaining romantic comedy. This film could have been more better.

A new Maniratnam film always gives you goosebumps as it begins, since you expect something extraordinary coming from the maestro yet again as per his reputed career giving many trendsetting films in the past. And when the experienced film-maker is returning with a love story based on new-age relationships mainly catering to the urban regions, the expectations got to increase further to many folds without any doubt.Thankfully this time Maniratnam delivers the goods if considered in terms of a youthful treatment, realistic dialogues, artistic vision, catchy music and emotions dealt as they tend to be in the modern world. But taking into account the subject and its basic storyline, the film mostly offers predictable content heading towards a usual culmination of a love story, with nothing surprising or innovative tried, probably fearing the risk of rejection.Talking about two young independent individuals, O KADHAL KANMANI (meaning Oh Darling, my love, apple of my eye) also popularly called as OK Kanmani, is just a perfect film for the multiplexes with a fine mix of romance, comedy, emotions and music leaving a feel good impact on the viewers as desired. However it actually makes that favourable impression because of two major strengths mentioned below, pointing towards the perfect casting done by the maestro.Firstly it's the immensely likable and infectious performance of its leading lady Nitya Menen, who carries the complete film on her shoulders with an innocent ease and conviction. The girl instantly makes a loving connection with her audiences and keeps them entertained right till the end leading from the front.Secondly it's the adorable characterisation of the lovable elderly couple played by Prakash Raj and Leela Samson just perfectly. And one can easily learn a valuable lesson of life from the couple, teaching you how to be patient, calm and together in those tough final years dealing with many physical ailments. In other words you just cannot imagine O KADHAL KANMANI without these three characters providing the much required support to its otherwise 'seen before' subject matter to be honest. Yes, Dulquer no doubt delivers an enjoyable, natural act as the lead hero with an impressive screen presence winning many hearts. But the soul of OKK remains Nitya Menen alone, contributing much more into the film's overall look and feel in comparison to anyone else in the cast.Moving ahead, OKK's realistically written script full of simple and relatable dialogues along with a well conceived art direction and cinematography plays a major role in maintaining that young feel throughout. Moreover its seriously amazing to realise that a man in his late 50s has made this with an all mature team perfectly portraying the mindsets of the youngsters and their common problems dealing with a new-age lifestyle and love-hate relationships.Once again getting a big support from the music & background score composed by A. R. Rahman, the film gets lifted just at the right moments with a (long due) fine soundtrack from the genius featuring songs such as Mental Manadhil, Aye Sinamika and Kaara. Plus I really loved and enjoyed the interesting arrangement & treatment of tracks Parandhu Sella Vaa, Malargal Kaettaen, Naane Varugiraen and the calm, soothing feel of Maula Wa Sallim, though a few could have been avoided keeping in mind the dropping pace post intermission. (Note : The views on music here are given keeping the lyrics apart as I couldn't get them completely due to the language limitations)So if you are looking for a light, refreshing, rom-com that doesn't make you cry and keeps delivering cute sequences with an enjoyable chemistry both between the young and the elderly couple played brilliantly, then OKK should be a perfect choice for you as a youthful entertaining film. But in case you are expecting an intense romantic drama with all those real life conflicts and emotions that once happened to be the forte of our master film-maker, then OKK might turn out to be a film from a different and new Maniratnam willing to explore the youth in a much lighter mood.Perhaps a changed Maniratnam with the changing times, who is simply more interested in making a light romantic, musical with a comic touch, solely made to give its viewers a good enjoyable time in the theaters. And that's exactly the reason, I personally found the film to be progressing too easily with no tension of any sort, making it shallow at times moving away from the actual life that faces a lot of adversities when it comes to'Live In Relationships', 'Risky Career Choices' and 'Family Conflicts'.Interestingly same is the case with most of the films today, clearly revealing their reservations in showing the 'Sadness' on screen resulting in a one side depiction of life making it completely off balance. Because, till you are not willing to talk about the two sides of the coin equally, you are not going to find much depth in your presentation be it a film, book, poem or any creative expression, whatsoever.Summing up, O KADHAL KANMANI is a MANIRATNAM film that has been solely made to be a success story, targeting the young viewers simply willing to enjoy their movie outings together avoiding any kind of serious emotional stuff. It has freshness, it has love, it has music, it has chemistry and it has Nitya Menen too, but the drama we always expect from a MANIRATNAM film has been sadly sacrificed in the name of box office performance.

A movie cant get better than Spectacular Cinematography of P.C.Sriram, Stunning Music by A.R.Rahman, Crisp Editing of A.Sreekar Prasad and Brilliant Screenplay by Mani Ratnam. O Kadhal Kanmani{OK Kanmani} is an EPIC with all these. The Entire CAST's performance right from Lead Pair Dulquer Salmaan, Nithya Menen to Supporting Actors like Prakash Raj, Leela Samson(brilliant performance as an Alzheimer's sufferer), TV Anchor Ramya Subramaniam(Debut) to everybody including tiny role of Baby Rakshana, everybody not just acted brilliantly but indeed filled life to the roles. An amazing, enthusiastic story by Mani Ratnam, which portrays all the shades/phases of life between a couple. Though the quarrel in Second Half might seem to lag the movie a bit, it phenomenally depicts the mentality of a couple. The Video game visualization for name cards background was a youthful thought. A MASTERPIECE crafted by all technicians who are almost 50 years old of age or even older, EXCLUSIVELY for the Gen Y, based on their contemplation. HATS OFF. Such an Excitement of Watching a REALLY VERY GOOD MOVIE. Lots of Good Aspects missed out in the review, because, then the review will be infinitely long, such an AWESOME, YOUTHFUL, REFRESHING MOVIE.
