ChanFamous I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.
StyleSk8r At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.
Brendon Jones It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
Bessie Smyth Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.
gwnightscream This 1982 horror film begins with a woman attending her father's funeral and she learns that he used psychic powers on victims. Meanwhile, a college girl is sent by 2 sorority sisters to spend the night in a mausoleum as part of an initiation. They try to scare her, but become trapped inside with the man's powerful, spirit unleashing other corpses/bodies which terrorize them. Meg Tilly (Psycho II) and the late, Adam West (Batman) are featured. This isn't bad, but I think it could've been better. It kind of has a "Phantasm" vibe with some gory make-up effects and a chilling score. Give it a try at least once if you're into horror.
callanvass This one had a ton of potential, believe it or not. It's drenched in creepy atmosphere. The problem is that it's so damn dull, by the time everything happens, I simply didn't care anymore. I've always found Mausoleums to be extremely creepy, perhaps even creepier than a cemetery. The storyline is good, if a little clichéd. We've seen snobby girls wanting to perform an initiation before in horror films, but it works more often than not. This does have some decent boo scares in the finale, but they don't know when to quit. There are WAY too many shots of corpses popping up, with endless shots of blue lightning coming from a psychic zombie. It felt like a broken record with how much they were showing it. I was bored senseless for this long, only for that to commence? Nothing much happens for the first hour or so, and that's how I get repaid? Way to make your viewers angry, McLoughlin! Also… why on earth would anyone agree to spend a night in a creepy Mausoleum, just to pass an Initiation test? I too, wanted to be popular back in school, but never would I agree to that. It was so moronic. I would have said screw you. You can tell this is the 80's, because we get cheesy obsolete terms, such as "noodle brain" The annoying subplot between Olivia McKenna (Melissa Newman) & her dead psychic father got on my nerves. Not much emphasis was put on it. Meg Tilly is decent as the lead. Ostensibly, her hysterical reactions were genuine, as she was legitimately freaked out by the Mausoleum. I don't blame her. She's distinctly sweet, and has this sense of innocence to make her likable, even if she is drugged out in the second half a little bit. Robin Evans plays the token slut as Carol. She did it well. Adam West is known as the original Batman, but doesn't give much of a performance here. The rest of the performances aren't worth mentioning. The only gore we get here are rotting corpses. The P.G rating showsFinal Thoughts: It's atmospheric, but way too dull for me to recommend. I'm not gonna tell you to avoid it, but prepared for your mind to wander half the time. 4/10
Aaron1375 It has been forever since I saw this movie, and so my first review of this film was very spotty as I could only remember a few scenes here and there. Well I bought the movie recently and watched it and was pleasantly surprised by it. Its funny, as a child I enjoyed the film The Dark, but when I recently saw it I was bitterly disappointed, but this one which I do not remember being all that good turned out to be all that good. Very nice atmospheric horror movie that has good music, cute girls, and a nice story. It also has a bit of originality to it as the things that is causing all the trouble is very different. Not sure I have seen any film that has had quite the 'villain' as it were, that this film has to offer. The film starts out with a woman having a premonition that has her screaming in the night. The film soon switches to a very disturbing scene as there has been a strange disturbance within a small apartment where an old man has apparently died of a heart attack and six other females have also been found deceased. He is entombed at the local cemetery's mausoleum where the woman who had the premonition is shown to be this man's daughter. Another title of this film is Mausoleum, but the One Dark Night title works too. Well a group of girls known as the Sisters are holding an initiation for a new member, only they really do not want her in the group as the lead girl simply wants to terrorize this wannabe member as she is now dating the guy that broke up with the lead girl. Well the final stage is to spend the night at the mausoleum and suffice to say things do happen. The effects are really good for a film made so long ago and probably on a cheap budget. The cast does a nice job as you see a very young Meg Tilly, who does a very nice job as the nice girl that the Sister group wants to terrorize. Also, in the film is Adam West who plays a bit of an inconsequential character, but actually does a good job with this person. The lead girl in the sister's group is sufficiently mean for the character she plays here. The main complaint I have is that it is a very long time before stuff really starts to happen as this film has a very long lead up. It is tolerable as they do a good job with the material, but when stuff does happen it is done so well you just kind of wish the film got to the good stuff earlier or was even a little longer. Nice corpse effects at the end and the one creepy dude in the coffin causing all the trouble looked very eerie. So kind of a surprise how much I enjoyed this, I would love to see more films of this type as horror films of today just do not seem to put anywhere near the effort the makers of this film must have done to make their film look very good and build up the tension.
lost-in-limbo So much promise, but too little in the end. I never even heard of it, until a friend brought it up. Tom McLoughlin's directorial debut feature (who would go on to helm Friday the 13th Part 6) shows plenty of polished style and atmospheric visuals, but the concept is never truly grasped and budget restrictions go on to show up. The plodding climax, with its tatty special effects (involving rotten corpses) only cemented it and it was obvious it was going for moody atmospherics than say blood and gore. Sure that's fine, but being lightweight it never demonstrated much in the way of thrills and taut locations never really struck a chord. Bob Summers' ominously seething electronic score worked more often than it didn't.World renowned psychic Raymar is bizarrely found dead along with several female victims and his body stored in a mausoleum. In that same mausoleum, high-schooler Julie decides to spend the night so she could be accepted into the clique; 'The Sisters'. However the girls have plans to scare her out her wits, but don't realize the horror that's actually awaiting them.I didn't find it tedious, but while the whimsical story is compelling, it's slight and flat structure just goes on to feel senseless. I wished it explored its odd supernatural and blaring telekinesis current, but its low-scale properties is no excuse for its languishing pace and messy intentions. Of course it deliberately lets the situation leisurely evolve with constant window-dressing and dragged-out dialogues, before breaking loose from its slumber. Performances are reasonably modest. Meg Tilly is fine in an innocent role, but its Leslie Speights, Robin Evans and Elizabeth Daily who add a real perkiness to their parts. Melissa Newman holds her own and Adam West doesn't get a lot to do.Strange, but merely okay.p.s. Would be interesting to see how McLoughlin's director's cut 'A Night in the Crypt' shapes up?
