NekoHomey Purely Joyful Movie!
Robert Joyner The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one
Ariella Broughton It is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
Guillelmina The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.
arne-ziebell Much too late this stunning and so moving film came to my attention. I won't go into the obvious story that all other viewers have referred to , BUT I will say please notice all the symbols and signs: the old grandmother telling about boys and girls, man and woman being the same on the inside, the grandmother is also the one cutting off Osama's long hair to make her look like a boy … so that Osama can get a chance to survive, notice how Osama is planting a hair look in a pot and keeps watering it, and notice the old man, the mullah – that Osama later will be forced to marry. This old man is also the teacher in the bathhouse who teach the young boys how to wash and clean their genitals and he teach them of their sexual dreams when they sleep. When Osama inters the bath house the old man says that "he" (Osama) looks like a girl, a nymph, a heavenly spirit. Later on the old man is the one (perhaps the only one) who rescue Osama from being executed when the community and the Taleban have revealed the truth about her not being a boy. The old man brings Osama to his house with his many wives and children. The old man is wealthy and so Osama will be able to look forward to a better life than the poor one she left with her mother and grandmother … or will she? The movie ends with the old man taking a bath so that he can be clean before the wedding night with Osama.Do also notice the boy, Espandi in the beginning with the incense, Espandi is the one who renames her Osama, and he by turns support her and betray her …Question: has Osama been the chosen one (by the Gods)… the special one? This movie is a masterpiece.
lizzyhollywood Cruel reality, boring movie. Watched this because of 1001 movies list. Disturbing - yes, but that doesn't make a good movie. Simple plot, lots of crying, no fight for yourself or your family, just giving up. Distressed child in a disguise who doesn't understand what is expected from her and just wants to play. Predictable and annoying, as i said lots of crying and nagging, about a girl who worries too much about her hair. Other people try to help her, but she just doesn't give a ****, she doesn't even try and you see nothing, just sobby complains. Why did this one won golden globe for foreign film? "Good Bye Lenin" was way better. Well it seems the horror of real life is really effective if you want award, no one cares about quality. At least it's a quick watch, only 83 minutes.
SnoopyStyle The Taliban is ruthlessly ruling Afghanistan and repressive especially for women who are demonstrating for work. Osama, her mother and her grandmother are without a male in their family. The hospital is closing and the mother is without work. Doctors and nurses are arrested. She doesn't get any of the pay she's owed. The only option left is to disguise Osama as a boy. This is an unforgiving portrait of life under the Taliban. It is probably as close as any modern thinking person wish to be. It is a place without hope. It's the gritty realism of Afghanistan that makes this so compelling. It is an unrelenting film about oppression.
princyj67 I read somewhere that Marina Golbahari used the money she made from this film to buy her parents a house in a poor part of Afghanistan. For me this seemed to fit in with the inequality of life that was depicted in this movie. I couldn't help but think that the star of one of the best movies I have seen in years could only manage a cheap house with her earnings while lesser actors in much lesser films earn millions. This movie for me was a real eye opener, not only in regards to the treatment of people under the rule of a military regime, but life in general in Afghanistan. The main point that I got from this movie is that not everyone who lives under a particular government supports or agrees with what they are told to do or with what is happening in their country. Most people just want to raise their children, have food to eat, and to get on with their lives.
