Borgarkeri A bit overrated, but still an amazing film
Fleur Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.
TheLittleSongbird Love animation, it was a big part of my life as a child, particularly Disney, Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry, and still love it whether it's film, television or cartoons.Another early effort for Bob Clampett and Porky Pig, 'Porky's Five & Ten' is not one of the best for either of them. It is nevertheless very good and has a lot to recommend in its favour. Other Porky Pig cartoons do more justice to him and are better representations of him, but even when he went on to greater things it is a quite great representation of Clampett, containing all that made worthy of much admiration. Not much wrong here in 'Porky's Five & Ten'. Porky is underused somewhat and the ending is rather weird and comes out of nowhere. However, Mel Blanc is outstanding as always. He always was the infinitely more preferable voice for Porky, Joe Dougherty never clicked with me, and he proves it in 'Porky's Five & Ten'. Blanc shows an unequalled versatility and ability to bring an individual personality to every one of his multiple characters in a vast majority of his work, there is no wonder why he was in such high demand as a voice actor. The animation is excellent, it's fluid in movement, crisp in shading and very meticulous in detail. The story may be predictable, but it's beautifully paced with never a dull moment and strongly structured.Clampett's unmistakable humour and style is all over 'Porky's Five & Ten', to highly imaginative and deliciously wild effect. This comes through in both the writing and the sight gags, with some inspired and witty Hollywood caricatures seen with the fish characters.Ever the master, Carl Stalling's music is typically superb. It is as always lushly orchestrated, full of lively energy and characterful in rhythm, not only adding to the action but also enhancing it.Summing up, very good. 8/10 Bethany Cox
Edgar Allan Pooh . . . Warner Bros. warns America (well in advance, one could say) with PORKY'S FIVE & TEN. This animated short opens with a March 24, 1938, newspaper headline about Beloved U.S. President FDR seeing off small businessman Porky Pig on his trade mission to Boola Boola. Since the Red Commies were on the march all over the world (then, as now), FDR volunteered to serve 16 years as Our Commander-in-Chief. Wishing to Lord it over We Blue Collar Union Label Working Class Average Normal Americans like the Oligarchical Greedhead Terrorist Czars of Red Commie KGB-ruled Russia, the U.S. Billionaire Rich People's Party then term-limited Our Beloved Osama-Killing Leader Obama to only eight years in office (at the end of which he could have beaten KGB Chief Vlad "Mad Dog" Putin's Puppet Rump by AT LEAST 10 million votes!). Though Rump STILL lost the 2016 Election by a 21st Century record defeat margin of 3 million votes, Putin's Hackers rigged the outcome for Rump's catastrophic Misrule to Destroy America. Warner Bros.' animators foreshadow ALL of these developments step-by-step during FIVE & TEN (Rump, for instance, is the pudgy little black guard minnow to which swordfish Putin gives his unscrewed sword). Then Warner uses the water spout which restores Porky's STOLEN birthright at the finish here to call for the retroactive abolition of BOTH the "Trump University"-like "Electoral College" AND U.S. Presidential term limits, so that Obama can immediately move back into HIS and OUR White House to keep us safe for at least another 12 years!
MartinHafer This black & white short from Looney Tunes was included on the DVD for "Hollywood Hotel". I DON'T recommend you rush out to see the feature, as it's not particularly good. Perhaps at least the cartoon is worth a look.Porky Pig is planning on opening a 5 & 10 cent store on a Pacific island(!). On the way, the boat is sabotaged by fish and they steal some of his housewares. So, you get to see fish swallow radios, clocks and the like with semi-humorous results. Then, very strangely, the fish all begin acting and looking like Hollywood stars--and it's pretty strange having all this accompanied with the tune "Hooray for Hollywood". Quite surreal, actually. Then, from out of no where, a waterspout arrives and saves the day for Porky. Weird, but enjoyable.
Lee Eisenberg I will say that "Porky's Five & Ten" is far from the best cartoon that the Termite Terrace crowd produced. But knowing that Bob Clampett directed, you should know that you're in for a few surprises. Certainly some of the celebrity impersonations were pretty cool. It seems that once again, nobody ribs Hollywood more than Hollywood itself.OK, maybe we could be cynical and ask why this is labeled a Porky Pig cartoon when he doesn't appear that much in it (not to mention that people in the 21st century very likely won't get some of the pop culture references). But I say that as long as we just accept the cartoon for it's completely wacky premise, then we should be able to have fun. Available on YouTube.
