How sad is this?

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

I saw this at the theater when it was released theatrically and I have been a fan ever since. I actually have grown more fond of this film with repeated viewings. Anyways, Priest is a very enjoyable and slick looking comic book styled action/fantasy movie that is a futuristic sci fi vampire western. Combining elements from Blade, Star Wars and the classic western, Priest is awesome and such delivers big time in the butt kicking department. This is set in a futuristic parallel universe where humans and vampires are engaged in an eternal war and battle for domination. In this retro futuristic society, the church runs the show and as such religion, government and industry are one. The vampires are faster and more agile then humans and humanity's only advantage is the sun. They are blind, insect like monsters that are vicious cgi critters that the priests must fight off with their special vatican style of kung fu. Priests are highly skilled holy warriors, similar to jedi knights, except their power comes not from the force, but the big man upstairs. This is done pretty well and the acting and storytelling are solid. Paul Bettany was excellent as the lead here, his delivery on his character is heavily influenced by Clint Eastwood and he pulls it off quite well without it coming off forced or cheesy. Bettany does well as action hero and is accompanied by Maggie Q, Christopher Plummer and Karl Urban as villain. As a whole I found this quite enjoyable and even though I much favor practical f/x, this is a total cgi fest. Even with that as a factor, the film comes off as a pretty fresh take on the vampire genre with great action and is well executed overall. Even though this is a PG 13 action film, the film is pretty violent considering and is much darker in tone than most PG 13 fare. Although, Priest plays as pretty unique it is not afraid to wear its influences on its sleeve and if you are a fan of westerns, Blade and Star Wars, Priest is the movie for for you and in my opinion Priest is much better than the Star Wars prequels.

This is a wonderful film that I have watched several times. Each time leaves me wanting for a continuation/sequel. I don't like the silly, lovestruck, emotionally dumb teenage lollipop gob vampires of "Twilight", or the mostly comical TV versions of "True Blood", "Buffy..." or "Vampire Diaries" filled with teenage gobbledygook and extremely horrible scripts. This is a straight forward film that offers entertainment. Much like "Blade", "Underworld" and as wonderfully freaky as "Blood, The Last Vampire" , but I think better! It failed at the box office, because its producers failed to properly advertise the film. Exciting, entertaining and filled with action packed special effects. LOVED IT!

(24%) A rather flat mix of both sci-fi and future western wrapped around a plot so thin and weak it makes rice paper look obese. Thankfully though it isn't overstuffed to make it 2 + hours long which would have made it unbearable to watch - which is at the very least something. Bettany's character is way too bland to warrant any movie based on him as he bores from scene to scene, and the fact that he's almost impossible to beat in a fight means that there's absolutely no tension or excitement to the action. So as a simple by-the-numbers time-passer this is just about acceptable, but it's far from a must watch Blade killer or anything special.

I initially went into this moving WANTING to like it but also NOT EXPECTING it to be able to cover everything in the graphic novels. Many aspects of the novels where naturally left out. At the time of the movies release 16 volumes of the manga had been released so it would be unreasonable to assume it all be stuck into one movie without feeling cramped like Raimi's Spider-Man 3. However, the over all style felt like a departure from what comes out of the books. Mixed with everything left out it began to feel almost as if a different movie should have been the end goal. The setting of the movie has more of a dystopian future feel rather than the old western feel of the books, the books also cover periods of time much longer past. If you are unfamiliar with Min-Woo Hyung's managa series I feel you may be more inclined to like this movie. Being a fan, having expectations , seeing the departure in style and potential story aspects left behind left a lot for me to be desired. Being the movie didn't do well enough there most likely will never be a sequel to flesh the story out better.
