A Disappointing Continuation

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

"Pumpkinhead" (1988) was directed by Stan Winston, special effects wizard and creator of The Terminator. It starred Lance Henriksen and was certainly a good movie in it's genre. "Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993) was directed by Jeff Burr. His sequels can be good (Stepfather II, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III) or really bad (Puppet Master 4 & 5). Pumpkinhead II was in between and ignored a lot of the facts from the original."Pumpkinhead: Ashes To Ashes", this time directed by Jake West, totally ignores the second movie and is a follow-up to the original. So we do get to see Pumpkinhead's original grave (was not in the second movie) and some characters return, like veteran actor Lance Henriksen (The Terminator, Aliens, Alien 3, Hard Target, Millennium) in a smaller role. It is also nice to see horror-icon Doug Bradley in a decent movie, since the latest Hellraiser sequels were just plain bad and awful to watch. The acting is OK, the story is entertaining with lots of special effects and some bloody gore. They were smart enough to keep the CGI effects to a minimum in just a few small frames, because that could have totally ruined this movie. No KNB effects group this time (Kurtzman, Nicotery and Berger handled the effects in the second one) so it is amazing to see how well it is done when you see the deaths and the creature effects in full. This time no irritating thunder and lightning strikes to hide the effects. The Pumpkinhead creature is original and amazing to watch, although it does look a lot like the "Alien" creature but that was also the case in the previous ones. If you like the genre, you certainly have to check this one out. Be sure to at least have watch the original one first. You'll find them better than expected.

The Demon of vengeance once again crawls out of the swamp when he is summoned by village folk seeking retribution for a doctor (Bradley) who found a unique work around for keeping his fellow townies safe. By selling the organs of their loved ones on the black market. The ghost of Ed Harley (Henriksen, returning from the 1988 original) tells them not to do it but you know they will do it anyway.Thoughts
Jake West (Evil Aliens, Razor Blade Smile) does a pretty decent job getting the third film of the series back in line with the original after a rather bad sequel. The special effects also beat out the second outing. Doug Bradley (Pinhead from the Hellraiser series) is always fun to watch as a baddie and it was cool that they worked Lance Henriksen back into the mix even though it was more of an afterthought than anything else.In Conclusion
If you thought "Blood Wings" was bad but did enjoy the late Stan Winston's original Pumpkinhead than give this one a shot. For a SciFi Channel original it's not half bad.

This movie should be expected to be bad and therefore not a surprise when it turned out to be so. Obviously going to be questionable since its a t.v. movie, but there are still TV movies out there worth watching. Low budget film. Average, if not below average CGI effects. Poor acting. Poor directing. Very few entertaining parts if any. Not a good movie for the horror fans out there who appreciate good horror flicks, but rather a mockery of what even a decent t.v. horror flick should be. The only minor good thing about this was it had lance henriksen who is awesome in almost everything he's in. If your a horror buff definitely skip this one. Actually everyone should skip this flick, the only people who should watch it are people who saw how bad the second one was and wanted to see if the third was better or worse. I.E. Pumpkinhead fans (are there really any?) may want to check it out but for everyone else, there are much much better horrors out there.

After a city discovers that the local crematorium has been harvesting bodies for organs and skin, a small group decides to resurrect Pumpkinhead to seek revenge on the bad guys. But they're going to learn a valuable lesson about revenge and how it consumes you.I don't even want to try to be nice to this film, because in all seriousness it was just not good. Some potential was here: Doug Bradley is a great actor, and he did a fine job in this as the town doctor. The crystal meth dealer was a good character, and one of the ladies was fun to watch (though her lack of nudity was a great loss to the film). But that's about it.Let's say the story focused on the crematorium and the organ harvesting. That's a pretty good movie right there. Why even bring Pumpkinhead into this one? It wasn't necessary. And when he became "CGI Pumpkinhead" climbing the buildings, that was just silly. I'll take puppets and animatronics over CGI any day... this film being yet another prime example of why I feel like I do (and even my friend Jason, who is nicer than I am, couldn't stop from laughing at the poor quality). This film also stars Lance Henriksen, which I'm sorry to say is not a good thing. Once upon a time, Lance was a sign you were in for a treat. Even his role as Frank Black on "Millennium" was pretty cool. But now, it seems he's not concerned one iota about choosing decent roles... he'll just show up for any script thrown at him. Lance, you have outdone Jeffrey Combs in the amount of crap you're willing to wallow in. Not only are you doing this (expletive) film, but a "Pumpkinhead 4"? Please God, let this franchise die.Maybe you're the one person who has been watching the calendar waiting for this sequel and will really dig it... and it might be the last time you'll ever see Doug Bradley look thin. But I can safely say this was the most disappointing horror film I've seen in recent weeks (which means a lot when you review 6 a week).
