A coming-of-age story centered around a small-town singer brokenhearted by the death of her brother in a car crash, who had secretly submitted her for a summer session at a performing arts academy in Los Angeles. In the academy, she experiences a whole new way of life in the big city, far from the small town lifestyle she's used to.

Matialth Good concept, poorly executed.
CrawlerChunky In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
Mabel Munoz Just intense enough to provide a much-needed diversion, just lightweight enough to make you forget about it soon after it’s over. It’s not exactly “good,” per se, but it does what it sets out to do in terms of putting us on edge, which makes it … successful?
Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
katier-36659 This movie is such a classic. Obviously not sophisticated but that's not the point of the movie. Just a solid feel good classic. Hilary Duff is great.
Kirsi Firstly, I was quite impressed by this movie. The songs in it, well, they were mostly what I expected - not very deep but lively pop music. However the instrumental music was awesome and by this, I would give the gold to Denise and her violin. The storyline was cute and you could follow it without any difficulties. I think I'll take it out again when I'm sad or lonely, take an ice cream or yogurt to go with it and enjoy. Spoiler-consisting remarks: 1) Jay was incredibly...well..HOT. I couldn't stop staring at him in some scenes. Though I think the whole relationship drama, a little bit decreased his value. I think there should have been a scene somewhere, him telling Robin something like "I don't want to be together. We don't have a relationship." Just because at one moment we see him being slightly mad at Robin after he was supposed to bring a snack, then he is happy about seeing her, then he flirts with Terri and suddenly him and Terri form a couple. 2) For one, about the predictability, I found that the moment Denise talked about having difficult time with money at home, the faith of the scholarship was quite confident. However, when seeing the performances, I find that she indeed deserved it the most. 3) When Terri's dad went to see aunt Nina, I wondered, did he really leave in 5 minutes or how is it that he didn't notice no sign of Terri's stuff anywhere. 4) About clingy Robin, I felt she could have been more meaner. The slight kiss in the rehearsal room and then that's that. How come no payback? On the whole, I gave it a 7/10. Yeah, I'm surprised too how my hand didn't move to go lower. As a lone fish in the sea of movies, it's not a sinker but it doesn't compare up to many big accomplishments out there, but, out of teen movies, I would definitely point it out as my favourite, alongside "She's All That". Both sort of corny, sort of predictable but yet solid sweets.
Nick Damian The story was boring and aside of from the violin player and the piano player, the rest of the musicians were pretty bad.She has a horrible voice and her screen performance isn't much better - in fact it is worse. Her songs are horrible in themselves - the lyrics are cheese and her voice makes them even worse. It's not that I'm picking on her - well maybe I am, but the movie just seems really pathetic with her and anybody who had any real presence doesn't get anywhere near the time they deserve.Uninspiring, boring and very slow and not entertaining. Watch something better like Back To The Future.
ctomvelu-1 Hillary Duff of CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 1 and 2 stars in this plodding kids-oriented tale about a young singer who attends a summer music program at a private school in LA. Her father thinks she's visiting her aunt in the desert, since he is dead set against this. What might have been another SISTER ACT 2 or MR. HOLLAND'S OPUS, to name a couple of well-known movies about musically talented kids, proves to be a disaster. The director, who clearly was not up to the job, provides only bits and pieces of musical numbers and keeps the focus on Duff, who is not an actress and only a so-so singer. Frankly, she also does not look right for the part but I will be charitable here and keep mum about her physical failings. The big finale is a dud, due in no small measure to the cameraman and editor, who completely screw up the presentation of Duff's recital. A better script might have helped, too, as nothing happens in this movie that we haven't seen a hundred times before. Rita Wilson, Rebecca DeMornay and David Keith are wasted as the adults in Duff's life. Only John Corbett as one of Duff's instructors comes across as interesting and believable, but alas, he is a bit player here. Skip it.
