Afouotos Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.

MusicChat It's complicated... I really like the directing, acting and writing but, there are issues with the way it's shot that I just can't deny. As much as I love the storytelling and the fantastic performance but, there are also certain scenes that didn't need to exist.

Fairaher The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

disinterested_spectator In the late sixties and early seventies, the anti-establishment feelings engendered by opposition to the Vietnam War resulted in a lot of movies that equated crime with freedom. Somehow, those who broke the law and flouted convention were better than those who obeyed the law, held down regular jobs, and led respectable lives. This movie is clearly in that mold.In particular, Jack and Cecil are small-time cattle rustlers, who kill a cow every now and then and sell the meat. John Brown owns the cattle and wants to catch whoever is stealing them. When Jack and Cecil steal Brown's prize bull and ransom him for a great deal of money, they begin to think about making a bigger haul.Meanwhile, Curt and Burt, ranch hands who work for Brown, figure out that Jack and Cecil are the rustlers. Instead of telling their boss, they end up agreeing to work with Jack and Cecil to make a big score. And while this is going on, Brown hires Henry, a senile old detective, who can hardly walk, to solve the crime. He is so feeble he has to be helped by his niece Laura, who is an innocent do-gooder. At least, so it appears. In reality, Henry is neither senile nor crippled, and Laura is not his niece, but his partner. Henry knows that a big-time heist is always an inside job, and he arranges to have Laura seduce Curt and get the information from him about the caper. They foil the thieves, who are sent off to prison.But as I said, this movie was made back when criminals were romanticized as free spirits, so it would not do to send them to a real prison. Instead, they are sent to a ranch penitentiary, where they ride the range herding cattle for the state of Montana, so it really does not seem like punishment at all, but just another way of being free.

Hifen8 Hilarious dry, sophisticated humor with insight into the ranching life of the Big Sky Country of the US. Really hits the mark for the cowboy-hippie life of Bozeman and Livingston, Montana. Great performances from Slim Pickens, Jeff Bridges, Elizabeth Ashley, Joe Spinell and shows that Sam Waterston actually had a lot of talent until he fell into the "Law and Order" grind. This is probably the best film written by Thomas McGuane and one of Frank Perry's best efforts as a director. Would probably make a great double bill with "The Adventures of Buckeroo Banzai." Anyone interested in the last Golden Age of American Film (late 60's - 70's) should see this film.

Ralpho Rancho Deluxe is something one doesn't see much of these days, a comedy that one has to pay close attention to in order to understand what has happened at the end. Although there are broad comedy aspects to the film, such as when our protagonists shoot up a Lincoln Continental Mark IV with a Sharps 50 Buffalo Rifle, the subtlety with which the plot unfolds is not something I'm used to seeing in comedies.Having said that, I didn't find the movie funny enough to laugh out loud or interesting enough to keep (DVD version). I bought it because there were some good reviews on Amazon.com, and because Slim Pickins and Jimmy Buffett are in it.Although the movie is just 92 minutes in length, it seems longer as the plot takes its time unfolding. That's not to say the plot is complex but rather the opposite. The plot is simple and could likely have had its proper unfolding time within the confines of a one-hour TV program. Consequently, the movie seems to have been padded with scenes that do little to advance the plot.Nevertheless, it's important to pay attention if you want to understand the ending. Despite the simplicity of the plot, certain things are left for the viewer to surmise. But you might find that this movie isn't worth the effort.

lescrl Thomas McGuane, 25 years ahead of the commercial marketplace, invented the [post]modern dialogue SNAP now central to the filmfop vogue. Anyone who enjoyed Jeff Bridges as Dude Lebowski MUST see this movie. Also recommended for those interested in the final disposition of the American West, those who thought Sam Waterston might be an actor, those who can't believe Slim Pickens could improve on his "Dr. Strangelove" role, etc.
