The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

If you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.

Mostly, the movie is committed to the value of a good time.

You know you are watching a winner when you find yourself hating the lead characters, feeling sorry for another, and getting mad at yet more. In my book if you get emotionally involved with a story, the story is good! This movie covers some darker sides of life and is expertly symbolized through the photography. Many scenes are dark, shadowy, and out of focus. When we are in Rogers world everything is fuzzy, dark, ill defined, and turbulent. Nick willfully jumps into his uncles lifestyle believing he's experiencing life. We (the viewers) know otherwise, but Nick is unwilling to jump off the sinking ship of his uncles life. When we enter Nicks world after he goes back home, suddenly all is bright and colorful. And we see how out of place Roger is in Nicks world. The last five minutes of the film is the defining moments of Rogers character. He has never grown up, he's still sophomoric as seen how he relates to Nicks friends. Physically an adult, mentally still a bombastic sophomore. An excellent movie for film lovers!

Scott is terrific as an arrogant jerk, a ladies man who teaches the fine art of picking up women to his nephew. This is an impressive film debut for Kidd in the triple roles of producer, director, and writer. The screenplay is quite good, full of keen observations about the male psyche. As producer, however, Kidd should have hired a competent director. So annoying is the camera work in this film that this man should not be allowed anywhere near a camera. Not only is the shaky hand-held camera nauseating but most of the shots are in extreme closeups with lots of blurry images. It is a shame that the good acting and script are undermined by the atrocious direction.

I'm sure most people won't find my comment to be of much value, but to those of you with any tendency toward motion sickness, please read on...I cannot comment on the bulk of the content of this film, as I only saw a very few minutes of it. I'm afraid the shaking camera was almost enough to induce seizures, and was simply more than I was willing to bear. (Does anyone still think this type of camera-work adds to the cinematic value of a film?) I suppose some people still consider a shaking camera to be artistic in some way, but as for me, this poor camera work constantly reminds of two things:1) that I'm watching a poorly filmed movie, with no chance of really getting into the story, and...2) that I need to add Dramamine to my shopping listLuckily, I borrowed this movie from the library, so I'm only out my gas money. Oddly, I still feel somewhat ripped off. (Must be those high gas prices...)

Campbell Scott stars as a very arrogant man, narcissist, playboy, supposedly intellectual lady killer very very unconvincingly, maybe that is the hole point.....OK. To me there are many moments were he is simply trying to be like Al Pacino first and foremost in Scent of a woman', in 'Donnie Brascoe' and 'The devils advocate' and that does not look like its on purpose, I simply noticed were he made his research but failed. but there were things about this movie that I liked such as some(not all) of the things he says to his nephew who appears to me to be no more than a victim of the generation to come. At Nicks age I already new the things his uncle is trying to teach him. although his uncle does say a lot of rubbish at times too. This film is like that. What I dislike about the part Campbell plays is how he just speaks his mind without anybody asking him for his smart, honest but mostly downright rude opinion.
