A story that's too fascinating to pass by...

I have to say that I have never watched Sabrina(1954) before which was played by Audrey Hepburn. This movie is not a simple remaking. The things around Sabrina were totally different from the last one, though what happened to Sabrina was not change. When I first finished this movie, I only focused on her stories. But I have a every strange habit which is that I like watching movies repeatedly. So when I started to watch it twice, I noticed that the director of this movie is Sydney Pollack who is the father of Out of Africa. His movies had always been known for their social and political issues. His movies always meant something. So I watched Sabrina(1995) with objective view. I found my attention was changed. What happened to Linus caught my eyes. If the change of Sabrina is to give the audience a visual enjoyment and a hope for a better love. Linus is a vivid reflection of the life of the people of that time in 90s, which almost everyone was eager for the success of the cause, as well as the possession of money and power. Linus, who graduated from Yale University at the age of 19, had managed his family's empire, who enlarged his family property from billions of dollars to astronomical figures and also on the cover of Time. Gradually, He lost himself in business, money, and power. He had a sad and lonely soul and the only thing in his eye was working, which made everyone afraid of him. However, in Masa, when he tried to keep Sabrina away from David, he found that there was something else in his heart. He told truth to Sabrina. He truly loved Sabrina, but for his family's empire, he must lay to her that he didn't. Linus had always followed the orders by his mother all his life. He wanted to change. And only Sabrina could save him, because she knew him better than anyone else. Sabrina found herself in Paris, and Linus found himself in Sabrina. At first, Linus though what he needed was the success of the cause, but in fact, he needed love, no one can tell a lie in front of their own sincerity, even he was a good negotiator. Sabrina(1995) makes us believe that, whether you are rich or poor, everyone is equal in love, and you will find the one who understands you, saves you and brings you happy.

I hate to say it, but I actually like this remake better than the original movie. And I love Audrey Hepburn. I love Bogart. But I don't think they quite click in the 1954 version. Okay, enough about the original. I love the actors in this remake. The chemistry is definitely there. And the love triangle is great. Not your typical love triangle either, by the way.The soundtrack is magical. And they did enough homage to the original version (using even much of Billy Wilder's script) to just perfect the movie. I love the Cinderella elements and Sabrina's time in Paris is perfectly depicted. And for a movie that was filmed 20 years ago, this movie has aged well. In fact, it seems pretty timeless.

This is the french pun for « it shined ». At first, the movie makes me cringe as it is, as usual for an American movie, a story about characters in upper society. It was even more dull that it sets up a romance with the daughter of the driver, so the low class. But as the cast is really cool and talented and that the characters aren't self-indulging or despicable and that the director offers a slow, romantic place, well, at the end, it was rather good. For a 90s movie, you have the feeling it's a 60s movie and the Paris depicted there is indeed the eternal (old) city of lights ! Harrison proves that he is among the best actor ever as he can play a lonely tycoon as if he had been one during his life!

Some people get very worked up over remakes of their favorite movies. I won't tell you that I particularly enjoy the experience; I don't. But as I watched this version of Sabrina, after having watched the previous one with Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn, it occurred to me - my mind was wandering - that remakes of movies, like the originals, are like different performances of a given play. No one, I hope, would argue, after having seen a great production of Hamlet or Macbeth, that those plays should not be done again by others. Of course, one could ask why do them if the new company doesn't have something to justify yet another production of them. But there's no reason to argue against further productions in principle. That's how I feel about this version of Sabrina. There are things that I particularly enjoyed in the previous version that I didn't like here. I was very aggravated that this Sabrina did not learn the lessons of self-confidence in Paris that her predecessor did: those lines are cut out of this script, and when she goes to the Larabee party after her return from Paris, this Sabrina is a bundle of nerves - she has not learned self-confidence.This movie is also more often funny than the previous version. That would be a plus for those who want to laugh more during a movie. So, in the end, for me this was not as enjoyable a performance of the story of Sabrina as the previous one. But that's because the aspects of the story that interest me aren't focused on in this version as they were in the previous one. For someone else who is looking for and enjoys different things, this version might have more to offer. And such a person might give it a higher rating.
