The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.

It's simply great fun, a winsome film and an occasionally over-the-top luxury fantasy that never flags.

A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.

Santa Barbara is a 2012 Italian TV movie that narrates the story of Saint Barbara,an early Christian martyr and convert. It stars Vanessa Hessler as Barbara together with Thomas Trabacchi, Massimo Wertmulle,Laura Glavan and Simone Montedoro. It tries to provide the viewer both an authentic and realistic depiction of the story of back in the 4th century.Barbara is a beauteous daughter of the Roman governor Dioscoro who has a strong affinity with the slaves. She is raised with a slave girl named Giuliana during the time of Roman persecution of Christians. When Giuliana was condemned to death and beheaded due to her Christian faith,Barbara was angry and decided to help Christians that were in prison and rebelled against her father. Then, she joins companionship with the Christians she saved and decided to become a follower of Christ and later learned that her mother died due to Christian persecution. As a convert, she learned about love and forgiveness.Later in life, she too was condemned to death for her Christian faith just like her friend Giuliana.Vanessa Hessler is a sight to behold watching this film. Her presence alone provides a lot of interest in the character Barbara due to her gorgeous face and lovely figure. She does a great job of portraying the main character although her striking beauty definitely overshadows that.Laura Glavan steals some scenes as Giulana especially the agony she feels during her persecution being a follower of Christ. As for the story,it was a good film about the Saint and we definitely feel the theme of Christian persecution which remains true at present especially in some parts of the world. We see how many people are willing to die rather than renege their faith and how strong their faith and hope in the risen Christ.
