Daninger very weak, unfortunately
Ameriatch One of the best films i have seen
SteinMo What a freaking movie. So many twists and turns. Absolutely intense from start to finish.
Caryl It is a whirlwind of delight --- attractive actors, stunning couture, spectacular sets and outrageous parties. It's a feast for the eyes. But what really makes this dramedy work is the acting.
Sandcooler Storywise "Sint" is kind of a rip-off of the killer Santa classic "Silent Night, Deadly Night", but the comparisons end there. While the latter is only still around because it's laughably bad, this one has actual redeeming features like a dark, moody atmosphere and a little bit of humour at exactly the right times. Writer/Director Dick Maas loves to toy with our expectations and every guess you'll make about the story developments will probably be wrong. For instance, you think tremendous hottie Caro Lenssen will serve as the Laurie Strode of this story and the finale will be her fighting off the unstoppable villain, but in fact she barely comes into play in the rest of the story (unfortunately...). Our final girls are an old drunk and a sex-crazed teenage boy, that's pretty creative to say the least. The production values of this movie are also surprisingly high. For a movie that "only" cost four million to make, the effects look pretty amazing. The killings are just relentlessly gory, Dick Maas definitely burned the candle on both ends to disgust his audience. "Sint" is one of those rare horror comedies that manage to be both scary and funny, most can't even get one of the two right. A thrilling ride.
homecoming8 Dutch director Dick Maas is best known for 80's classics (atleast in Holland) like "The Lift" and "Amsterdamned" More recent international movies like "Do Not Disturb" and "Down" were anything but classics. "Sint" (or Saint Nick) falls somewhere in between. You would expect a rip-off from 1984's slasher hit "Silent Night, Deadly Night" where we have Saint Nick instead of Santa Clause doing all the killing. But that's not the case here. As a blueprint Dick Maas used three horror classics and even duplicated entire scenes: 1. Halloween (1978, John Carpenter): The scene where the three girls walk home from school and when finally the last girl suddenly bumps into someone on the street is directly copied. The police officer who tries to warn everyone but is not believed is in fact the Dr. Samuel Loomis character(the late Donald Pleasence). Like in "Halloween", the girls live in the same street across each other. 2. The Fog (1980, Carpenter again): Saint Nick arrives with his helpers/crew in an old ship during heavy fog. They strike back because of an ancient curse and look like zombies. Very obvious with similar settings. 3. Nightmare On Elm Street (1984, Wes Craven): The town folk strike back at the main villain and burn him alive. Years later, he returns in a supernatural way. Saint Nick is the dutch Freddy Krueger.. No points for originality here, but "Sint" is one of the few Dutch horror slashers and entertaining on many levels. There are a lot of interesting killings and nice special effects in the tradition of "Friday the 13th etc.." Maas keeps the pace going and the story never gets dull. The acting is OK on most part but Egbert Jan Weber and Co. as students ?? They are way too old for that. The dialog is mostly funny but sometimes cheesy. For a slasher movie, it's certainly worth watching. But I don't think it will spawn any sequels and will make Saint Nick the next Freddy Krueger, Pinhead, Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers. "Sint" is not a classic and not a strong movie, it's just entertaining for what it is.
srfcazemier What I was expecting when I went into this movie was exactly what I got. Bad stuff vs. good stuff: There are somethings that are essential to the plot that are never explained, problems which could have been overcome with relative ease, so that was a bummer. Also, there are three main plots, and one of them, if it wasn't there I wouldn't miss it. Lastly, it is a short movie. This wouldn't be a point of criticism if it wasn't for the fact that it does tend to stretch itself out, like it was looking for feature length. The good stuff? It still is a lot of fun, being both original as well as something else compared to other St. Nicholas movies, the acting is good with most characters, the dialog is pretty solid, it's funny when it wants to be and scary when it needs to be. If you are into the St. Nocholas myth, you can't miss this one.
trashgang What a problem this flick had. I understand that so many people have problems with changing Santa Claus from a good man into something evil. But there were so many forums about destroying this flick just because the poster used to promote Sint had an evil Sint on a horse. Naturally, some were also afraid that children were going to ask questions about Sint. It was finally released last year (2010) with the so-called evil poster but once it was out of the cinema's there were troubles again releasing it on DVD. Finally, all the troubles are over and Sint saw it's final release last week.I knew that it was going to be a horror and I know the director Dick Maas from his flicks The Lift and Amsterdamned. But what he did here was for me really excellent. For people not living in Belgium or the Netherlands the actors will be unknown and they all speak Dutch but I guess that they will release it with English subs. Also the score used will have some rarities in it, most of them are famous Dutch chants to celebrate Sinterklaas. I would say, just think of Santa Claus. First we get to know what happened many years ago with the Holy man and what he is doing as revenge. And let me say, he does some revenge. It's sometimes just on the border of gore but you will see decapitations and axes and machetes going into bodies. The red stuff do flows, sometimes it's syrup sometimes it's CGI. And naturally there's a lot of CGI but I don't have any problems with it because Sint is running on roofs with his horse. For me it's one of the better 'Nederhorrors" for the moment. Just let's hope that it isn't going to be full moon when Sint is visiting our country...Gore 3/5 Nudity 0/5 Story 4/5 Effects 4/5 Comedy 1/5
