AboveDeepBuggy Some things I liked some I did not.
Teddie Blake The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.
Sammy-Jo Cervantes There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.
Brennan Camacho Mostly, the movie is committed to the value of a good time.
TheCinemaphile It's Ramu's(Ram Gopal Varma)turn to pay homage to the Cult Classic 'The Godfather'.I have no idea how many Directors actually got inspired by THE GODFATHER,but I am least bothered.Because Ramu's 'Sarkar' is good enough for me.Subash Nagre(Amitabh Bachan/Big B) is a ray of light for the down-trodden and ill-treated in the dirty lanes of Mumbai. He is respected by the 'aam janta'(public) and feared by the sinners. If found reasonable,Nagre is a man who will murder a person for the sin he committed!!!His family comprises of his wife, elder son Vishnu Nagre(Kay Kay Menon) a wastrel, foreign returned MBA graduate Shankar Nagre(Abhiske Bachan),Avantika(Tanish) Shankar's cousin.Nagre is up against Selva Mani(Srinivasa Kota Rao),Swami Virendra(Jeeva)amongst other.Rashid(Zakir Husain in a chilling villainous role) approaches Sarkar with a drug and the latter warns him against moving forward the drug plan.Rashid teams up with Sarkar's other enemies and they try their best to dethrone Sarkar, but to no avail. In the midst of this,we have Shankar returning to Mumbai with his girlfriend Pooja(Katrina Kaif),who later is force to ditch him for obvious reasons.Vishnu lands himself in trouble over a murder and he is thrown out of the Nagre house and he is aptly used by the Rashid team. With everything against him,Sarkar is is imprisoned and an attempt is made on his life. And at this point of time,Abhishke(Shankar) takes over the show and delivers one of his unforgettable performances ever. His revenge spree coupled with the haunting 'govinda govinda' background score, sends shivers down the viewers spine!!! Big B is too good for us to ignore his performance and the scenes are power-packed with his presence.Things get even better when his Shankar slowly gains screen presence and marks his stamp during the final part of the movie. It is difficult not to make comparisons with 'The Godfather',but when Ramu has given us an excellent piece of adaptation, who is to complain.I thoroughly enjoyed the film..two thumbs up Ramu!!!
diligentdrool_14 First of all..I begin by saying that I AM A HUGE FAN OG "THE GODFATHER"-Novel. But Sarkar is not a complete adaptation of Gofather. Only the basic undercurrent of a mafia Don has been taken from it. I feel Sarkar is a great film. RGV proves himself a wonderful director who is truly different from most of the contemporary directors of today who make films for mass appeal. For a film like 'Sarkar' to get mass success, it should be surprising. But go see the film and you will know why! IT is truly the best film of 2005 with 'Black'.The sets are wonderful...Dark and intense...and so is the look given to all characters. They were all very apt to the theme. The background score especially 'Govinda' one is truly intense and helps make you spellbound to this film. The editing is cool and thumbs to everyone behind this genius of a film. The most important thing here is the standout performances! Abhishek Bachchan handles his role very well and we see the rising superstar of tomorrow here. Great job by AB junior. Same goes for Kay Kay...he was superb as the bad son Vishnu. I don't actually agree where some people say he stole away the show...Because...it truly belonged to the Bachchans alone!!! The new meanie in town Rashid rocks!!! Truly what a performance man!!! Standing ovations to him...But if you are pitched against the actor-Amitabh Bachchan in any film, then he is sure to be too bhaari on you. He just excels like anything in this role. This is surely one of his finest performances and goes on par with that of Black. He truly beats Marlon Brando in the role. He makes you go spellbound with those piercing and intense eyes and stands tall and strong as the best actor ever born in Indian Cinema. He excels as Gofather/Subhash Nagre and you get to feel the pulse of his power!!! Had Black not released the same year, Bachchan needn't have worried...Because he would get all the awards and accolades for this performance in Sarkar. He proves himself the 'SARKAR' of bollywood...still going strong in an unbeaten 64!!! He is the ultimate actor without doubt.TWO THUMBS UP TO THE BACHCHAN, ALL THE OTHER ACTOR AND RGV for such a great film!!!
Vijaymohan c Sarkar would be a good movie for people who haven't seen The Godfather. I personally found it to be a very bad "Indian" version. The culprit?- Definitely not the actors... they've done their best. But neither the story nor the direction was actually good. Here are the major flaws in the movie- 1) The music score-... they had the guts to believe no one would realize that a major portion of it is copied from Minority Report (exact copy). N yeah... it's not put the right way either. 2) The story isn't as deep as the The Godfather. Actually... it's like as though some 15 year old guy saw the original flick, thought he understood the whole movie n then decided to make a Hindi version out of it! 3) Character personification- Director's fault again. They've tried to... make the lead characters- "deadly" (also a specific kinda music's played to make it even more evident). I cannot call this a flaw considering business, cos' most Indian viewers like/understand only this kind of stuff. 5) The chase sequence. Even that was really bad... typical bollywood sequence- more than 6 people try to shoot a single guy... n the bullets keep missing. There was this similar sequence in Company by the same director... that scene was way realistic than this!- of course, may be that's cos' even that sequence (in Company) was a complete copy of a scene in an English movie... The Assignment I think... This movie's good for some person who's not seen any good "Mafia" English move... or someone who's never seen good movies! Of course... it's not that bad... but when u compare it... it sucks!N yeah... this isn't anywhere close to Company either- that I agree... is a good flick. I think the director just wanted to make a quick buck... this certainly can't be his best effort!Sarkar's a hit- agreed... but that's how our average viewer is! N yeah... definitely better than average Hindi movies.
santoshtiwarih3g This movie is a very difficult to review movie. Lets start by going through the good part. Amitabh Bachhan as always is brilliant. There are so many pictures amitabh is doing in the current times and still he makes me wonder by doing something in one of these movies which again reminds how good he is . There could not have been any body else in Indian film industry who could have played this role with this conviction as amitabh has done. Same goes for other actors in the movie as well , Abhishake and Kay kay have both come out so good that if you have not seen original , you would be surprised by the sheer rawness and seriousness of the movie. But thats where the crux is , if you have seen the original than even if you don't want to feel like that you will feel to put this movie on the second grade. Abhishake is excellent but Al pachino is much better than that. The conflict of a person caught between love of his father and a clean life demanded by his would be wife is depicted in such a way by AL pachino that it would be nearly possible for anybody to come closer to that.over all it is an excellent movie but the way it is , comparisons to original is inevitable and when it is done original proves the point that it is original.
