Okay... Let me just say that I'm pretty picky when it comes to movies in general. And..I tend to dislike most modern movies that I see. But, I do love sci-fi in general. So, before I watched this I read alot of reviews about it, and found many saying bad things about it. So, I wasn't really expecting much. But man, was I wrong. I was blown away by this movie. It was freakin awesome. And, every time it would reach a point where I would expect some boring cliche, instead there would be an unexpected plot twist. Particularly this is the case at the end 8O.. Wow!!! I so want a sequel now.Anyways, this movie has awesome effects, cool guns, cool ships, cool monsters, likeable characters, good story, and particularly good and unexpected plot twists, like characters you didn't expect to die, dying, and characters you did expect to die not dying 8O.. I think this movie is better than just good. I feel this should have been a blockbuster hit. This is by far one of the best space/sci-fi/ action films I've seen in a long time. For me this one is an instant classic.

Another reviewer put it well. This is a B movie that doesn't realize it's a B movie. There is a sense of quality sitting under the surface throughout the entire film, like there is a pretty good movie trying to get out.The camera work is adequate, and sometimes even manages to push into the territory of good. The set pieces, while obviously budget, are quite well done, as are the props. The monsters kind of fall on the goofy side, both in appearance as well as design and concept. Their existence really doesn't make much sense even within the story being told. The ability to "self replicate" is a feature that would have never been incorporated, and since the story seems to imply that they were engineered by "evil company name here", this feature feels more like a tacked on way to push the plot. A "Oh crap, how does he become a monster at the end?" type of thing. The out of order scenes don't really work within the pacing of the story and feels like something done after the fact, rather than as part of the writing. Overall the editing feels pretty bog standard "I learned Adobe Premiere!" and lack any sense of artistry.I will say that the ending "twist" I did not see coming, though that could as well be simply because the monsters and their transformation is never developed. They are portrayed as basically mindless killing machines, with the exception for the flashes of the one that kills the warden, however this does not establish that they have any level of intelligence that would make the ending make sense. The acting is okay, though some of the dialog is a bit stilted at times. Whether this is due to the writing, direction or acting, I am not entirely sure.At the end of the day, I get the impression that this film was done by someone who knew how to do everything, but lacked a real understanding of WHY to do everything. It's like they learned everything from film making for dummies, or from YouTube tutorials, and have only a grasp of the technical aspects, and none of the art. This ultimately makes the film feel very pain by numbers. Everything is there, but nothing feels like it really matters to the story.

This movie would have been a great movie if it weren't for the worst monsters ever. The monsters were human test subjects that looked like the turned into super snapping turtles. The back and forth chapters were interesting because it gave you more knowledge into Sy's story, and it showed why he was there on Osiris. The main reason this movie gets a 5 instead of an 8 or 9 is because of the "plot twist" at the end. Sy gets attacked by the monster and starts to transform into one, but he ask Indi to give him something sharp to kill himself. She doesn't do it, and it cuts to another backstory in Sy's life. This was my favorite part because it showed why he was in prison, and that he was good loving man who lost his family but made a very wrong decision. Then the bad part happens. After the planet had been wiped clean, two explorers search the planet to find indi and creature that turns out to be Sy... really? Sy turned into one of the crazy monster soccer who had been killing people the entire movie? But instead of being crazy, he is guard dog for Indi... should've let him die or survive. One or the other. I still hate how terrible the monsters were. Made the movie so much less interesting.

Having initially put this on in the back ground as I did other things, it piqued my interest enough to make me restart it and make a concerted effort to watch it, I am glad that I did.I've read many of the other reviews of this film who say that the script could have been better, that the editing isn't up to Hollywood standard and the action missing in many ways.To a degree they are right, but, they are missing something very fundamental, this is not a Hollywood block buster, this is a small Australian film, that punches above its weight on many fronts and frankly is better by a very long shot than a lot of the dross Hollywood is pushing out lately - Suicide Squad, Alien: Covenant, Transformers: The Last Night, The Dark Tower to name but a few.If you enjoyed Chappie, District 9, Wyrmwood and are generally a lover of more independent films then I think you will like this film, it isn't perfect by a long shot but, I hope they do make a sequel as I am interested to see where the story goes. Finally I would point out one actor for praise, Isabel Lucas surprised me, I initially mistook her for Yo-Landi Visser from Chappie! I thought she did surprisingly well in this role and for me, was the stand out actress/actor in this film.
