Let's be realistic.

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

This movie was recommended by Netflix for gay people. The opening scene with a female pleasing herself was at first a put off (partially because I'm a gay male) but I decided to give the movie a little bit of time to develop. I am very glad I did. Even as a gay man i found the sexual tension palpable, and clearly not for any gratuitous reasons. This movie found the perfect balance of what was shown and what was not. Many men whom believe in a innate weakness of women would not like to watch this movie, it will make you feel uncomfortable. Forget gender bias and watch this great movie with a open mind it truly is a cinematic pleasure. Thanks, Matthew

This film won awards, which only goes to prove that you never can tell. After a start that is at least intriguing, the movie appears to settle on unremarkable terrain, the story of two young women who resolve to sleep their way to the top, but who come unstuck when they meet a man meaner than they are. Frequent explicit scenes features lashings of masturbation, lesbian sex and even incest can't really hide the orthodox nature of the story; and then, when the film does become original again, it does so in a way that is over-the-top, bizarre and unbelievable. What makes it worse is that this movie seems to take itself seriously, and though the entire cast is attractive, endless shots of gyrating bodies grow tiresome after a while. Strip them away, and what's left is both confusing and empty.

Was this film meant to be a porn movie, an erotic movie, a drama or a fantasy movie? It apparently wants to be all but as a result of mixing it all up is neither. If this was chosen as one of the 10 best movies in France, it says more about the current quality level of French film production than about this movie, and combined with the relatively high note on IMDb it looks like plotting two beautiful young women and having them pose more or less undressed throughout the film has been enough to lift this movie up from what should have been a very low evaluation in my humble opinion. Not one single actor seems to have more than very basic acting skills. The characters are stereotypes and the actors unable to add life to their roles through facial expressions, voice or gestures. Even the sets are stereotypes. It is as if the movie was made to be used in film schools to teach students what needs to be done to lift a movie up from the state of just putting a sequence of images onto a film roll and to make into a real movie. The subject of young women using their bodies to gain promotion is interesting enough, and a good movie could have been made over the lines of this film. But it takes professionals to do that, and professionalism is sadly missing from beginning to end. The only comfort is the very beautiful young women, acting skills or not, but if that is the only thing one is interested in, then an erotic or porn movie will do much better. Don't waste your time with this.

Do you like well made movies with good acting and cinematography? Do you like trashy exploitation? If you answered yes to both of these questions then this is the movie for you. Some people are frustrated that someone would dare bring a story that belongs in a lurid paperback to screen with the former qualities, calling it cheap erotica with art-house pretensions. This is not true. "Secret Things" never overplays its hand and never asks to be taken as anything but what it is. It does not achieve things that a film like "Last Tango in Paris" does, but it doesn't try to (a good thing, given that it lacks Marlon Brando...). Instead, it tells a lurid story of manipulation and social climbing that is both quiet and operatic, sexy and repulsive. There's naked bodies present and food for thought if one is interested. A very well-made movie.
