Holstra Boring, long, and too preachy.
Gutsycurene Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.
Grimossfer Clever and entertaining enough to recommend even to members of the 1%
PiraBit if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
bradleygranz Skinwalkers is werewolf horror action film about a 13th boy has the power to end the curse of all werewolf
p-stepien A group of bloodlusting werewolves on harleys embark on a mission of mayhem and murder in search of a 13-year old boy, who according to prophecy will be responsible for lifting the curse of the red moon. Protecting him are his mother and a group of closer or further relatives who call themselves family, like Nana, a gun-toting granny. They too are werewolves, but their aims are drastically different - they wish to dispose of the gift of skinwalking. A fight soon ensues and the warring factions meet with bloody consequences...In general a rather easy watch, but a bit too clean for it's own good. There is surprisingly almost no gore and most bloody scenes actually take place off camera. The plot itself is rather straightforward and predictable once the basic premise and characters are presented, but it does keep you involved, which is always a good sign. Nonetheless weaknesses surpass the positives, as acting tends to be all around the place with only a couple of people keeping their cool throughout the film (especially decent if standard performance by Elias Koteas). The horror movie also isn't helped by the special effects. Although the werewolves look nice when half-changed the fully changed skinwalkers are plastic and very B-grade. But than again anyone expecting anything above the standard of a B-movie will be sorely disappointed. If you keep your expectations low and just enjoy the ride you might actually enjoy it. Although all action sequences aren't very well done and border on being crappy. So given you have a horror movie with iffy acting, crappy effects, mediocre plot and no really inspiring action what is their left to cherish? Not much, but still any movie with a gun-toting granny can't be all bad...On a side note: Why the hell is it that the black guy is the first to be killed off? To make matters worse in this movie a black guy is the first to die not in one of the factions, but in both. It is a bit ridiculous and scriptwriters really should do something about the banal and slightly racist predictability of such a scenario.
M. T. I am commenting ONLY to make one point: THANK GOD the makers of this movie chose to use REAL actors with makeup effects. I have often lamented the use of CGI in films ranging from Deep Blue Sea to, well, name it. Remember when Spielberg used Bruce to create the illusion of Jaws? That movie still scares people and it does so for one reason only: we know it isn't a real shark, but we are able (if we choose) to suspend our disbelief because the creature (i.e. robotic shark) is actually on camera with the actors and they interact with it. Well, the same happens in Skinwalkers. I thought the acting was very good, and it was shot perfectly (e.g. lighting). When the Skinwalkers finally change form I was hesitant, waiting for the CGI, but none (that I noticed) appeared - this was good old fashioned WORK - apply make up (thanks Stan Winston) and acting. WATCH this movie for this reason if for none other - it reminds one what a movie with fantastic (i.e. fantasy) characters SHOULD be: as real as it can possible be. We will never believe that computer generated effects are real, and they totally stop the story for anyone over the age of twelve. Thank you to those responsible for this choice. And as for those film producers who still insist on clinging to CGI - revisit the classics, whether Winston or Savini - these are the masters of the genre to whom you owe your career. Stop insulting their legacy and start honouring it with some actual effort. I think this was a good story and an entertaining flick!
quantumcat Where it all goes wrong. I watched this movie -cut for PG reasons- and it was entertaining. Butit doesn't do all that well. I can understand why people bash this movie and why people like this movie. For that I rate it average.Pros: decent action movie with a fast paced story, solid script, brawls, shoot outs and explosions. Cons: it's an action movie, with occasional -occasional- werewolf action (Except the grand finale). This is not your typical werewolf horror movie, in fact it focuses on being an action movie. The other thing is that all the werewolf's look like descendants of the wolf man. Yes, bipedal, furry, and most of all... very human-like. They could have been Bigfoots cousins. It does keep the women sexy, as far as sexy can go with furry human like-creatures... But somehow it's not scary enough. You don't even get to see one descent changing scene.Maybe we have been spoiled rotten by "an American werewolf in London"(AWIL) and by "the Howling"(TH) and even by the CG aided "Underworld" or Indies as "Ginger Snaps" and "Dog Soldiers", on both the changing scene and on werewolf design. But bipedal hairy humans that resemble as much as Quest for Fire Caveman as Bigfoot that don't even have wet noses... The upside is, the actors -even though hairy- are still recognizable, so the wolf man look could have been used on purpose.I may be nagging about this ...but c'mon: "STAN WINSTON STUDIOS PRESENT" and Creature effects by "STAN WINSTON STUDIOS"What I am trying to say is, that the werewolf theme raises the bar a bit high, since you'd expect horror and wereWOLF and in your face man-wolf changes, because what has all been done earlier in AWiL and in TH and similar movies, not even mentioning the involvement of "STAN WINSTON STUDIOS" And the movie fails to deliver all this. So ... for a werewolf movie ... very disappointing.Bottom line: For an action movie with supernatural twist, it's actually a pretty good movie! For a werewolf movie ... poo happens
