The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.

There's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.

.Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

There's really only a shell of the biblical tale of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah where sin went rampant and caused God to strike them down through a truly violent earthquake that mixed its power with an underground volcano. Slave girls with definite Caucasian backgrounds and modern hairstyles indicate that not much research was done into look of the times. Even researching past biblical epics would have been big help in maintaining a realistic view of the actual time period. Stewart Granger is cast as Lot, and unless you are a student of biblical studies, the movie will not give you much detail into the time period or relationship to other more famous biblical persons. The only real sin that the film shows the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah is of violence and certain elements of sexual perversion (all heterosexual) including what seems to be the aftermath of a huge orgy.Anouk Aimée provides the camp element here as the evil Queen, mistress of slave Pier Angeli who marries Lot and becomes the infamous pillar of salt in the film's closing sequences. It is everything leading up to the destruction of the two cities which seems to take forever to lead up to. Once this occurs though, the special effects are pretty amazing, and the final sequence of Granger shouting out to Angeli to look away is pretty frightening. But this film is one of the reasons why film historians often call the biblical epics poor representations of recorded history, something obviously caused by the presence of a still stiff production code that couldn't allow the elements of the recorded history to be shown on screen.

While there isn't much in this movie that is Biblically correct I still thought it was an enjoyable film all the same. Essentially, "Lot" (Stewart Granger) has decided to relocate his followers and herds to the lush plain of Jordan in which the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah are located. It is at this point where Hollywood takes over and everything is radically different from the Scriptures. Be that as it may, "Bera" (Anouk Aimee), the Queen of Sodom and Gomorrah, recognizes that the Elamites are a threat to her cities and is desperate to protect her position at all costs. So when the Hebrews (led by Lot) enter the plain of Jordan she hastily forms an alliance with them. Lot agrees due in large part to his naive assumption that he can eventually convince the people of Sodom and Gomorrah to abandon their wicked ways. What he doesn't consider is that the Hebrews are also capable of adopting the ways of Sodom and Gomorrah as well. At any rate, rather than spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it, I will just reiterate that what follows is not found in the Book of Genesis. But it is an exciting film with good acting by Stewart Granger, Pier Angeli (as Lot's wife "Ildith") and the aforementioned Anouk Aimee. It also has some nice scenery and some pretty good special effects for its time. However, it is rather long (154 minutes) and the manner in which the writers transform Lot into a combination of both Abraham and Moses is a bit far-fetched. But that's Hollywood I suppose. Slightly above average.

Sodom and Gomorrah is directed by Robert Aldrich and co written by Hugo Butler and Giorgio Prosperi. It stars Stewart Granger, Stanley Baker, Pier Angeli, Rossana Podestà, Giacomo Rossi-Stuart and Scilla Gabel. Music is by Miklós Rózsa and cinematography by Silvano Ippoliti, Cyril J. Knowles and Mario Montuori. The Last Days of Sodom and Gomorrah.Regardless of the fact it leaves some of the Bible story behind, it simply is not a good film. It's a tired Biblical epic that finds Granger and Baker manfully trying to ignore how low they have got as they are surrounded by a bunch of no mark actors trying to make a sword and sandals piece work. It lacks dynamism, the Euro production barely masking what a elongated bore the story is. It looks nice at times, the great Ken Adam creating some eye pleasing sets and the location photography (Morocco/Italy) provides a suitable backdrop, but come the hokey and cheap looking finale you realise there's been too much talky intrigue and not enough pulse raising. 5/10

This movie was awful. It is one of the worst movies by far that I have seen. The actors are great, no doubt. But the storyline is way off basis.Lot never had to lead any people (especially the Hebrews). Lot settled with his wife and 2 daughters because the land was enriched, well watered region that was "like the garden of Jehovah". It must have been the perfect place to settle his family, since lot chose the whole district of Jordan. But the people was deceptive. Once Lot settled in, he then realized that the 2 cities was not god fearing. They openly practiced homosexuality and any possible sin under the sun. The bible states that the men were bad and gross sinners against GOD. (gen 13:7-13; gen 19:17, 23-26, 30) Lot and his family feared and loved their God Jehovah. Because of their love for GOD and GOD's love for them, he sent 2 angels to save Lot and his family. But before the destruction of these 2 cities, Lot tried to reason with GOD to save the cities if he could find just 1 just man in either of the 2 cities. Lot could not find 1. Lot no doubt was well off and enjoyed living in modern homes of that time with running water (instead of tents he once inhabited).Once GODs angels led Lot and HIS FAMILY (Lot, his wife and 2 daughters) to the safety of the mountainous region thats when the destruction took place. Lot eventually with his daughters were reduced to living in a cave after the destruction. This movie does not stick to the historical biblical facts. At the end of the movie there shows a multitude of people leaving Sodom and Gomorrah heading to as the narrator says "promised land". There was only 3 people who survived that destruction. Lot's wife looked back (longing for the life left behind in those cities) causing her to become a pillar of salt. Both cities were destroyed and not 1 soul survived! Moses is the only servant of the True GOD Jehovah to lead the Hebrews from Egyptian bondage to the promised land.I was really disappointed in this movie because it did not stick to biblical facts. The movie is OK and good to have in a collection but keep in mind that it does not portray actual events. The bible does not speak of a Queen and odds with her brother and it certainly does not tell of any pact that Lot made with any queen to protect the cities from invading nations. If it was not for the off based facts then this movie would rank with movies like "Ben Hur, Spartacus and 10 Commandments" I would not recommend this movie simply because it is not bible based and the facts are off based.
