CrawlerChunky In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
InformationRap This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.
Tobias Burrows It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
Billy Ollie Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable
justincrunden Sphere is a brilliant Sci-fi piece that keeps you guessing right to the end. It has a very clever concept and brilliant action and acting. You will not be disappointed. It has a great cast and Dustin Hoffman and Sam Jackson are both terrific and Sharon Stone is for me a very good actress who brings a good energy to the film. If you're a fan Ray Donovan then there's the rare treat of seeing Liev Schrieber deliver a great supporting effort. This film has a lot of suspense and very cleverly leads you in a certain direction only to completely turn things around. I would highly recommend this film if you like Sci-fi with a twist. Samuel L Jackson also gives an impressive performance which is key in keeping the suspense going. Dustin Hoffman is just pure class.
suite92 Initial Tableau: Dr Goodman is being escorted out to sea to aid distressed survivors of an airplane crash. On the way, he sees many naval vessels, which increases his curiosity. Then he is put into isolation, after which he meets old friends: Dr Halperin (biology), Dr Adams (mathematics), Dr Fielding (astrophysics). Along with Captain Barnes, they are taken to a facility 1000 feet below sea level.Delineation of Conflicts: The site the team is taken to was constructed to study a huge space ship discovered on the seafloor. The people in the team were chosen to match a report that Norman wrote some ten years before. Hence Beth, Harry, and Ted all blame Norman for anything that happens during their current predicament. In his report, Norman had chosen people he knew well for each position in this 'first alien contact' team. As the work progresses, Barnes has choice words for Norman as well. Besides the human interactions stemming from past choices, the team has to face the enigma within the space ship, and do their best to survive its considerable power.Resolution: Working through the puzzle is well worth the time.
fazalarkhan Sphere was a surprise. I wasn't expecting it to be in my top 10 because of such low ratings on IMDb. A lot of people were disappointed by the ending, but for me, that was the best part. It's full of surprises, you can never guess what's coming next! I've already watched it around 10 times, and I'll make sure that my kids do too or I'll disown them. Although I'm pretty sure that not everyone is going to rate it so highly, but my first viewing experience was amazing and maybe that influenced me to give it such a high rating. (I won't disown my kids, I'll be disappointed) I admit the review is biased, but I love this movie so much!
gavin6942 A spaceship is discovered under three hundred years' worth of coral growth at the bottom of the ocean.Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a score of 12% based on 50 reviews, with the critical consensus that "Sphere features an A-level cast working with B-grade material, with a story seen previously in superior science-fiction films." Indeed, one wonders what Sharon Stone and Dustin Hoffman were doing in this. Hoffman, of course, was brought on by the director, his friend Barry Levinson. But Stone should have had better projects. Some aspects of this are interesting, and even though it was a flop at the time, I could see people today (2015) going back and really giving it a second chance. It has not become a better film with age, but it has something to say about science fiction films of the 1990s. (Most, it seems, were dystopian, so this is something of a fresh change.)
