Linbeymusol Wonderful character development!
Hulkeasexo it is the rare 'crazy' movie that actually has something to say.
Micah Lloyd Excellent characters with emotional depth. My wife, daughter and granddaughter all enjoyed it...and me, too! Very good movie! You won't be disappointed.
Nicole I enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
tavm Before I review this cartoon, I'd like to make clear that this was neither the first sound cartoon (Max Fleischer did that a few years before) nor the initial one starring Mickey Mouse (that would be Plane Crazy earlier in the year). It was, however, the first audio recorded one by Walt Disney and his associate, Ub Iwerks. Now if you're expecting the good guy/bland Mickey of the later years, you'll either be very disappointed or maybe very glad this Mouse has a more mischievous side. And how bad Mickey could truly be: In playing "Turkey in the Straw", he pulls a cat's tail and throws him off with it, pulls a goose's neck, pulls little piglet's by the tails, and turns their mother upside down and pushes her teats on her body's front! Since this was just a cartoon, I laughed at many of these gags not to mention at Minnie's cranking a goat's tail with music coming out of his mouth after that goat ate her music sheets and her bass. Oh, and I also laughed at a pre-Code gag of a boat pulley lifting Minnie's skirt and lifting her by her panty! What I just described is a loose account of the plot which also involves a large humanized cat as the captain who may have later become Peg Leg Pete in other Mickey Mouse cartoons. Okay, I don't really consider this a great cartoon but it's still a very entertaining one so on that note, Steamboat Willie is still highly worth seeing.
timon310 While it's popularly thought and Disney propaganda, that Steamboat Willie is the first Mickey Mouse cartoon; the truth is that Plane Crazy is when Mickey made his first appearance. All one would have to do to check this is to look at the release dates. Plane Crazy was released before Steamboat Willie. My thought is that because Mickey attempts to have his way with Minnie in a not so very nice way in Plane Crazy, Disney has made a concerted effort to promote Steamboat Willie as Mickey's debut but that's not the truth. I love both of these shorts, but Plane Crazy gets the short end of the stick in Mickey Mouse/Disney Studios history.
Atreyu_II "Steamboat Willie" was the first Mickey Mouse cartoon released. For the 1920's it was considered an innovation because it was the first Disney cartoon to feature synchronized sound. These are the two reasons why this cartoon has historical value. But is this a good cartoon? Not for me. If it looked dated even in the early 1930's, now this looks horribly dated. It's all in black and white. Plus, the story isn't good, the cartoon is too old for my taste (and I love classics), I don't like the music here and I also hate the way how these characters were drawn in early efforts, they just look so different, so primitive. That Captain "Peg Leg" who hates Mickey Mouse... I had no idea that was Pete (the famous and annoying Disney villain). All I thought was «What kind of hideous monster is this?».There are countless Disney animated shorts and classics which are very old but always fresh and timeless. "Steamboat Willie" is not one of them. Not even as entertainment this serves. Of course, each one's entitled to his/her own opinion and I respect that, this is just my humble opinion.
JV-6 Steamboat Willy was not the first cartoon to feature Mickey Mouse. The first film to star America's friend was "Plane Crazy". "Plane Crazy" was released May 15th 1928 in Hollywood California,in the silent movie format. "Steamboat Willy" was released November 18th 1928 as a SOUND movie (it was also released July 29th 1928 as a silent film). Thus making "Steamboat.."the first SOUND film of Mickey but NOT the first film for the little American Mouse. While many game shows have used the question: "What was the first appearance of Mickey Mouse?" The true answer is "Plane Crazy" not "Steamboat Willy". These dates can be checkout on IMDb under "release dates".
