Boring, long, and too preachy.
Maidexpl
Entertaining from beginning to end, it maintains the spirit of the franchise while establishing it's own seal with a fun cast

I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
Frances Chung
Through painfully honest and emotional moments, the movie becomes irresistibly relatable

Reading through, a l0ot of the hate is for Stephen King and not so much for the series itself. Mind, they are hati8ng on him for being a popular writer in the literary version of the hipster nothing mainstream ethos. And while they are doing it, they are forgetting the same hatred for the same reasons were targeted at Poe, Lovecraft, Dumas, and Sabatini...so King is in pretty good company for the haters. His problem is...he doesn't know how to end things. At least most of the time with King the pay off is the build up and that build up is really fun to read...or in this case watch. But it ends like The Stand, with a solid "meh." And the plot is very Drive-in B-Horror movie, which is fun, because, you know, they aren't trying to do Shakespeare who was also a--gasp--pop writer in his day. It's King, he does horror and some of it is EPIC, like The Shinning, The Stand, you know the names......but most of it is B-Movie fun and enjoyable on a whole different level.Rose Red is a B-Movie from the haunted house vein and it works, it makes for an enjoyable show with an enjoyable cast. The is until it tapers out in the last act, but it's long enough where that doesn't matter, we had the build-up and it was worth it.

Most viewers with a penchant for haunted house stories will see the parallels between Rose Red and The Haunting of Hill House and there are many. It's no coincidence. King set out to rewrite the novel for the screen and during it's genesis it motives into Rose Red. Basically, King's screenplay replaces a lot of the subtlety ofJackson's story with a few by-numbers boo! Scares and guess what - oooh, a creepy kid that doesn't say much. I'm not saying I didn't have fun with Rose Red but it has none of the depth or ambiguity of Robert Wise's The Haunting. You can't replace dread and genuine unease with an unholy stack of cheap CGI. What I found really funny though was the fact that one reviewer here said they preferred the Jan de Bont film. Thats the best laugh I've had all week.

There is nothing new here.We have all seen this before in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist A team of psychics plan to investigate a mansion known as Rose Red of former owner Ellen Rimbauer and try to uncover the mysterious deaths and disappearances which occurred there. The CGI special effects are good. But the plot and poor scripting make the film a bore for a 4 hour sitting. There is no suspense at all.The only good actor involved is Julian Sands (of Warlock fame). The other actors performance is mediocre at best.A director similar in stature to Kubrick or Hitchcock could have made this a better film.Better watch 1408 directed by Mikael Håfström than this film.

As an avid Stephen King fan, I'm always excited about new work of his. Rose Red was no exception. However the more of his movies I see, the more I think he seriously needs to discuss making them with another production company. I love the idea of Rose Red, the cast was chosen well, and of course it was very well written. But the execution was mediocre at best. It was pretty clear that some of these special effects, in fact most of them, were made from a shoestring budget. Some things were just plain cheesy. In this day in age, the graphics should have been a bit more convincing. Nancy Travis did a fine job showing the deterioration from a slightly eccentric college professor to obsessed psychopath, but at times her acting was not the greatest. All in all if you're a King fan like me, you should check this out, but don't expect to find "Shawshank Redemption" or "The Green Mile" here. Good work, but he needs to fire his directors. I give it a 7.5, but round it up to an 8 because it was written by Mr. King.
