Absolutely brilliant

it is finally so absorbing because it plays like a lyrical road odyssey that’s also a detective story.

New challenge #1: Term Life starring Vince Vaughn and Hailee Steinfeld and directed by Peter Billingsley, whom you folks might know from the ever timeless and unrelenting during the holidays 'A Christmas Story'. I'm not sure where this filmmaker's eye lies but visuals is clearly not his forte. This was a flat looking movie with easily some of the most inconsequential gun fights I've seen in quite some time. This is a story about Nick who plans heists and sells these plans back to criminals. He lives his life at a distance from his daughter to keep her out of harm's way. You know where I'm going with this don't you. Nothing escapes your attention. She does get drawn into his world when a certain heist goes sour and the villain of our piece frames Nick. They're forced to go on the run. Honestly this movie is pretty flat in most respects. The performances are fairly one note even the late great Bill Paxton gives a generic villain performance. Vince Vaughn is not comfortable in this role. He needed a stronger, firmer hand guiding his performance. This is something he got in 'Brawl in Cell Block 99', a movie I recommend. You don't feel the stakes much and the actors can play these people in their sleep. There are so many quality actors in this. People like Jonathan Banks, Jon Favreau, Terence Howard and Taraji P Henson. They don't get to do much. This is a cheap looking time waster that is fairly mediocre and you'll forget most of what you saw once you're done. I give this movie a D.

I'm glad I ignored the negative reviews and watched this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The casting was fantastic. I've never thought much of Hailee Steinfeld as an actress, but I thought she did a great job. And Bill Paxton - what can you say - he always adds a certain dimension to every movie he is in. And veteran Jonathan Banks was perfect in this movie. By perfect I mean he played his part with a solidity and a believability that really gave the movie it's anchor. And I really really liked Vince's character in this. He too made it a totally believable role. I had to give this 10 stars. I loved it!

I just found this movie to be filled with hackneyed dialogue and shop worn and often ridiculous plot elements. There's nothing here that we haven't seen so many times before in other films.Vince Vaughn, who often delivers his lines here like an automaton, stars as Nick Barrow, who's a professional heist planner. However, his latest caper, that he planned and sold to the son of a Mexican cartel boss, has gone terribly wrong and he finds himself on the run from not only the cartel boss but a group of crooked Atlanta detectives.Hailee Steinfeld co-stars as Nick's 16-year-old estranged daughter Cate, who, due to certain circumstances finds herself caught up in it all, and will have to go on the lam with her father. The remainder of the movie will have them either running from or confronting all those after them, while they, of course, do a little father-daughter bonding.Overall, the film for me was just a rehash of tired plot elements, and the whole thing was an uninspiring watch.

A very surprising movie. With a father/daughter rocky relationship at the heart of the movie and a great cast of actors that must have done this because they like each other and not the money. Low budget but well used scenery and sets. I am not a Vince Vaughn fan so I was surprised that I liked him in the role. But it was Hailee Steinfeld that steals every scene she is in. Which is saying something with a cast that includes Bill Paxton, Jon Favreau the great character actor Jonathan Banks as the crusty friend/mentor to Vaughn. Even the dynamic duo from Empire,Taraji P Henson and Terrence Howard have some fun. This movie is more formula then substance but it is very entertaining. I think that Term Life has more life in it than some of the other reviews say it has. I hope you will try this movie out. Hopefully you will be surprised too.
