AniInterview Sorry, this movie sucks
Sameer Callahan It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
Phillipa Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
david-sarkies I remember years ago, when I was a pimply faced teenager, that my peers absolutely loved this movie, and a part of me went along with them. I had seen it advertised on the back of a comic book and since it was named after a car, and I wasn't all that interested in cars, I expected that this film was going to be boring and thought no more of it. However, of late it had been sitting at the back of my mind, and I managed to track it down and watch it again, if only for old times sake. Well, in short, it is really, really bad. Basically it is just one long Andrew Dice Clay comedy sketch. I can sort of understand why my peers may have liked the movie, particularly with the number of scantily clad women, and Fairlane's numerous sex jokes (including giving it a name), but sometimes we simply grow out of that phase of life. The other thing was that the acting was pretty atrocious, and really seemed to be stilted at times. Anyway, the film begins with the lead singer of a heavy metal band (which sounds a lot like Van Halen) dies on stage of an alleged drug overdose, while Ford, who happens to be a 'Rock and Roll Detective', in that his clients, and cases, all involve the music industry, is finishing off another case involving a stalker. Anyway, he is approached by an old friend to find a woman that he claims to be his daughter (but in reality is just a groupy), and proceeds to meet an untimely end. This film has all the typical tropes that you would expect from such a film, including the detective who is jealous because he is stuck with his dead-end job while Ford gets into all the cool clubs. However, the jokes end up wearing pretty thin after a while, and the ending has everything wound up quite conveniently, including bringing Ford and the girl that does like him together. Oh, and there is this kid that keeps on popping up, and it is only at the end that you find out why he seems to be always hanging around. As I mentioned, I'd never heard of Andrew Dice Clay before this film, and really didn't think much about him afterwards. It was only after digging up this film from the dusty archives that I realised that they were making a really big deal about the guy. It turned out that he happens to be a stand-up comedian, but since I'd never seen any of his acts, or heard any of his jokes, the name really went over my head. In fact I've noticed that he hasn't seemed to have made all that many other films either. I guess that really says everything about this film, and that it is basically just some crude excuse for a bunch of buys to giggle at jokes that aren't all that funny.
hall895 How much Andrew Dice Clay is too much? After watching this movie it's clear that 104 minutes is way, way, way too much. An "action comedy" with no actual action or comedy The Adventures of Ford Fairlane is a miserable failure. No surprise that Clay never starred in another movie after this turkey. This is the type of movie which could kill even a good actor's career. And Clay, as is made painfully clear throughout this movie, is not a good actor. He's basically playing himself and he can't even do that right. His act grows very tired very quickly. Can't think of anything legitimately funny to do? Eh, just toss out the f-word again. Hilarious, right? Nope. This is a movie with an awful script. With the terribly uninteresting story of Clay's Rock n' Roll Detective solving a crime we are never given any reason to care about at all the movie was always doomed to fail. But if the story stinks it's the acting which really makes this an absolutely painful movie-watching experience. Clay is awful, but we could have figured that. But he gets absolutely no help from his eclectic supporting cast. How eclectic? Well there's Freddy Krueger, Al Bundy, Elvis Presley's wife, that incredibly annoying guy who used to voice the insurance duck, Tone Loc, Wayne Newton and a koala bear. Everyone in this group has their awful moments but you haven't experienced true hell until you've been subjected to Al Bundy's Booty Time. That's this movie's worst moment. And that's saying something because this is a movie of nothing but potential worst moments.
Chabex This movie is one of my favorite from my high school area- we quoted a lot of it's phrases since.Of course I was watching it Hungarian dubbed at that time but I think that was for the better. This is one of the rare cases when I say I prefer this version more. The voice act for Ford was done by one famous Hungarian rock musician (Feró Nagy) who was the same attitude and even more hoarse voice.I even liked the story and the gags - this movie has a re-watch value for me. Acting is pretty good as well so if you like the mood and the hair of the 80's along some good music- watch this movie. One last thing: Respect to Jimi Hendrix :-)
Talis Briedis One of my all time fav's!! This movie has the best one liners. I gave the movie only a 9/10 cuz the story was a bit cheesy in parts. But the Grendel conspiracy in the movie is what has ACTUALLY happened in the music business. That is the sad irony of this movie. But to get over that depression, just watch the movie and the laughs will cure you. This is Dice's trophy performance. Mostly a good supporting cast also. But Dice just outshines everybody here. But the one liners are irreplaceable and timeless. But you also have to deliver them in that same voice. Dice Rules!!
