This is ultimately a movie about the very bad things that can happen when we don't address our unease, when we just try to brush it off, whether that's to fit in or to preserve our self-image.

I was looking forward to seeing this movie as I am am usually impressed by Banderas and Neil as actors. Visually the film is impressive too with a fascinating twist on 'film noir' genre as the movie is shot in colour and not B&W. Saying that, I've watched this and L.A Confidential in B&W and both still capture the essence and vibe of classic noir from the 40's and 50's However, as I settled down to watch The Big Bang, literally within minutes I began to wince at the unnecessary harsh language being spouted out by the actors. Why bother making such a stunningly visual treat and then stuff it full of bad language. For me it just ruins the viewing vibe. Now I can swear like a sailor as good as the next guy but sometimes, I just don't want to hear it.

This movie is such a blatant ripoff of Murder, My Sweet (1944) a great film based on Raymond Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely. And nowhere in any of the film's info is Chandler even mentioned. Here are some of the similarities:-The opening scene in the interrogation room. -The detective is hired by a very large man to help find the man's girlfriend.-They both go to the club the girl used to work but the place has changedAnd that's just a few of the plot devices lifted from Murder, My Sweet. I don't mind films that are homages to other films, or even parodies, but sheesh, give the original some credit. The director is quoted as saying he was inspired by the movies Touch of Evil and HUD. Okay, yeah whatever.Judge for yourself.

First, read the other reviews that rate this lowest - no need to repeat what they say, yes, this is a total piece of garbage. Banderas is awful, the script is pathetic, everyone involved should be ashamed. But in case you are wondering how it ends (yes, I actually watched it all, I was curious) - the letters were written by a cross-dressing physicist (I'm not kidding), the cops turn out to be the villains (Oh No!), Banderas manages to kill all three of them (shocker!), the Big Bang experiment just blows up and leaves a huge crater (whew!), Banderas gets away with the two girls and the diamonds, which they find in the gecko's tank. So now you don't need to waste your time watching to the end, stop wherever you are, it does NOT get better.

A previous reviewer says the movie is similar to Until the End of the World or time (or something like that, sorry, I can't back up to find the right phrase) -- I'm not familiar with that movie, but for sure, the basic concept of The Big Bang is drawn from the 1944 film noir classic, Murder, My Sweet, from the Raymond Chandler book Farewell, My Lovely -- Murder, My Sweet begins with Marlowe, temporarily blinded, being interrogated about some killings and he tells them the story of being hired by big Moose Malloy to find his stripper girlfriend who turns out to -- well, I won't tell what turns out because it would be a spoiler, but it's pretty much what happened in The Big Bang sans the sci-fi ending -- I also didn't pick up on half of Banderas dialog and I've always liked him -- I gave the movie 5 stars because it was an attempt to do an updated film noir detective story and I love the genre -- but I pretty much thought the movie wasn't watchable
