Absolutely brilliant

It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

If you take a corny 3-camera sitcom, remove the canned laughs, leave the dumb jokes & applause breaks, & drop it completely untainted & unexplained into the "real" world, what do you get? One of the strangest, funniest, most well-casted, conceptually brilliant, daring, & uniquely anarchic Hollywood comedies of the 90s. And who would've thought a pre-2000s Brady Bunch Movie would be so progressive to have a gay character in it & their sexuality NOT be the butt of a joke?

I grew up on the Bradys, and the references to the classic TV series came at rapid rate and I couldn't stop laughing throughout the movie! There's a sharp edge to the script which doesn't let up. For example Alice said to Mike not to "bend over" in the opening five minutes of the movie. You can draw your own conclusions. One highlight was the cameo appearance of Davy Jones (yes of the Monkees), fulfilling Marcia's dream to perform at the prom where he sung "Girl". Jan's turmoil of her inferiority complex was a bit overplayed but still, it had its moments.Betty Thomas made a name for herself as an actress in Hill Street Blues, but she excels as the director of this fine movie.

As a big fan of the original Brady Bunch show, seeing this movie always makes me laugh harder than the show. Of course the show was immensely better, but this movie is one not to be taken seriously at all and just laugh at all of the forced stupidity. That's right, the writers of this movie tried to make it cheesy.Set in 1995, the Bradys are still heavily 70s. This does a hilarious job paying homage to how unintentionally cheesy the show was and the clashing styles of different decades. This is grunge vs hippies. Gary Cole and Shelly Long play Mike and Carol Brady: caricatures of Robert Reed and Florence Henderson. The main plot is that their neighbour Larry Dittmeyer (Michael McKean) tries to get everybody on the block to sell their houses to foreclose a real estate deal, but the Bradys won't sell unless they come up with some money. McKean looks like the guy that played Dittmeyer in the old show. I thought it would have been funny of they somehow incorporated Squiggy from Laverne & Shirley into this, since McKean is best known for playing his best friend, Lenny. I know The Brady Bunch and Laverne & Shirley have no connection, but this is just so homage filled. The subplots of this are used from past Brady Bunch episodes. Bobby adjusts to being safety monitor, Peter deals with his voice changing, Cindy is a tattle-tale, and Greg tries to make it big as rock star "Johnny Bravo." But the biggest one is the sibling rivalry between Jan and Marcia. Jan is jealous that everybody loves Marcia and ignores her. This was actually done better here than in the episode. Cindy overhears her parents' dilemma and tells her siblings, so they try to raise the money themselves. Yes, original Brady cast members make guest appearances. Dittmeyer's son is a big bully who picks on Peter, and the real Peter stops him from smashing pizza in the new Peter's face. This is brief, but a very pleasant surprise. The real Greg Brady plays a strict record producer who rejects the new Greg. Real Greg bashes new Greg's image, name, and song (Clowns Never Laughed Before) which is hilarious because we all know that real Greg is bashing his own self! Jan runs away and is picked up by truck driver Schultzy who is played by the real Alice. And the real Carol plays the Brady's grandmother. Having her play grandma was a smart move.As I mentioned, the Bradys cling to their 70s vibe, so they don't get lots of the sexual innuendo that's in this. Marcia's best friend is a lesbian and she doesn't realize it, and none of them see Mrs. Dittmeyer's hots for Mike and his sons. These clashes really make this one fun and groovy picture!

My friend, when learning that I had taped and was watching this movie said: "You're kidding! You're not going to watch the Brady Bunch movie! You're sick!" My response is that he is just a blind idiot that thinks style is everything that is him and if nobody conforms to him then they have a problem. Okay, the Brady Bunch movie is not the best of all movies, but it is funny in a very satirical sort of way.I never watched the Brady Bunch when I was young, and never really liked it, but I thought the clever part of the movie was trapping them in the 70's and bringing them into the nineties. This movie looks at the 90's in a very satirical sort of way, yet the Bradys are completely innocent and don't realise that the world has changed. Where everybody is playing heavy metal and chasing same sex relationships, the Brady's still think Davey Jones is a hit and consider a kiss at the door is the furthest one should go on the first date (not that I really disagree with this, but being 26, one no longer dates, but rather forms relationships with the people around me and we simply get to know each other, but then I'm not exactly the one who knows everything about dating). This seems to be the style that movies move, or the way that I think they should movie, focusing more on satire. Thomas in this movie is clashing the ideal family with the reality of the 90's. It is an attack on the American Dream, and even though they win through in the end, the entire situation is so absurd that one has not option but to laugh. The patriotic speech is a little annoying and creates an unrealistic feel that props up the American Dream once again. I feel that everything that is done to undermine the dream through the movie is completely destroyed by the speech. Then I think that it is something that would detract from a Brady Bunch Movie anyway. But when I consider the speech, it is creating the ideal again, what should be and is not. We should have our neighbourhood and should be allowed to live there in peace, but we all know that it is not true. What happened to the Bradys was absurd, but we know that in reality this will never happen. The point of this is to drag the stupidity of the situation to an extreme end so as to show how stupid it really is. This reminds me that I should sit down and write the drama script in this light, stretching the stupidity to the absolute absurdity.
