Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

The Burning is one the most well made and scariest slasher film to be made. This is a pure classic gem that stands out from the countless other 80's slasher movies. And I would even say it can compete with Friday the 13th. Now I know F13 became more popular, but I think if this movie came out before, it probably would of been just as popular. Unfortunately it came out in the middle of the slasher boom, and didn't get recognized at first, although that is changing now a days. What made the movie stand out from so many other slasher films of the time was a few things. First the mood of the movie was very scary, and always made you feel unsafe. Second was the pace of the movie. The movie is very well paced, unlike many other slasher films of the time that are either rushed into or dreadfully slow. The acting was also very good for a horror movie. You actually get attached to these characters, their not just a bunch of dumb teens. Then there's the very good gore effects, which really gives this movie its flavor. Tom Savini did a fantastic job in this movie with the make up. And then of coarse is the score, which is super creepy and makes your heart race. Overall, this is a very suspenseful and awesome movie. It has a realistic feel to it, and keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time. I would recommend to any horror fan!

Gather around the campfire as I tell you the urban legend of the caretaker Cropsy out for revenge against the kids who disfigured him.Armed with a pair of shears he returns back to the place of his suffering to find one camp counselor who effected his past Todd. Now Todd must stop the madman before He wipes out the camp and disappears for parts unknown. The plot mostly takes clues from Friday the 13th with the revenge plot, campfire pranks and oversexed teenagers picked off one by one. Yet the picture works its huge caste to it's advantage by setting them off in different directions and activities that feel like a summer camp.Still I wish the script had been a little tighter to smooth out the ruff edges and the ending had been reshot to deliver a big showdown instead of anti-climatic jargon that ends before it begins. Which is a disappoint since it was all the suspenseful Chase scenes and scary imagery promised something big.Tom Savini, the master of special effects, never fails to deliver the real life liked gore and bloody body parts that leave psychology scars. You'll see a few familiar faces before they became big time stars or forgotten by time. Not the worst horror has offered to the franchise, just mediocre. You aren't missing any revolutionary ideas.

Any fan of the genre of 80's horror will love this movie, but beneath the norm of gory deaths, naked teens and campfire stories there lies a truly great movie behind the surface. The storytelling is great, the build up and character development is sensational for a slasher movie, and if the wonderfully gruesome special effects aren't enough to keep you hooked the magnificent plot will. Apart from a great story this movie does what many other in it's genre fail to do - scare you! There are many edge-of-your-seat moments and genuinely frightening scenes. Overall it is a great movie which is underrated by many, I would put it up there with the likes of Friday 13th and Halloween, it's a shame it doesn't get recognized in popular culture like the two aforementioned do because it's really a top drawer horror movie. It's refreshing that an 80's slasher movie can have such an original plot and back-story, but it doesn't stray too far from it's roots leaving both hardcore horror fans and casual movie watchers satisfied.
