Wonderful character development!

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

The plot isn't so bad, but the pace of storytelling is too slow which makes people bored. Certain moments are so obvious and unnecessary for the main plot. I would've fast-forwarded those moments if it was an online streaming. The ending looks like implying a sequel, not sure if this movie will get one

It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

Fab on all points. See it, many times, as I have done.

Very disappointing. Fantastic for the first twenty minutes when we are treated to fantastic underwater sequences with amazingly beautiful shots of fish, Jacqueline Bisset and more fish. After that first foray into the depths and all seems to be going so swimmingly, a rather underwritten tale of who gets the treasure ensues. Shaw and Nolte and in particular Eli Wallach plus, of course Bisset give it their best but despite a fine John Barry score, this is sunk as soon as the hoary old story rears its head. I would also say that if its to be underwater 'car chases' and fisticuffs, then keep it simple and keep it sexy. This gets very dull and drab and is completely lacking in humour. Makes Jaws look like a great film - which of course that is.

Based on a novel by Peter Benchley and written by the one-hit wonder author himself, THE DEEP isn't half as interesting as it sounds. This is an exceptionally dull movie, enlivened by only a few peripheral pleasures. Watching people swim about slowly underwater is one of my pet movie hates (which is why some of the Bond films don't exactly thrill me). I mean, it's cool that actors get to act underwater, but so what? Underwater scenes are just there for padding and take up half of this film's running time. The rest is taken up with dialogue between uninvolving characters and some half-hearted attempts at suspense when Louis Gossett Jr. brings in his strong arm gang to retrieve treasure for themselves. This is a film that rightly or wrongly appears to have achieved (ahem) prominence due to Jacqueline Bisset's appearance in a wet t-shirt, which no doubt whetted the appetites of many an adolescent viewer. As well as Bisset, the film is visually superior with rich underwater photography accompanied by an effective John Barry score which helps bring out the beauty of "the deep". It's just that so little happens during the two hour length you'll wonder why they bothered.Sure, there's an involving chase between a truck and two bikes, a cool fight scene involving an outboard motor (!) and a fun climax involving a giant eel and Louis Gossett Jr's head, but that's about all the excitement you'll get out of this movie (okay, perhaps Jacqueline should go in there too). Shaw seems wasted in a repeat of his salty old sea-dog role from JAWS, with an accent that changes every couple of minutes; Nolte is fresh-faced but boring as the young hero, and Gossett Jr. doesn't get to be near nasty enough as the baddie of the piece. Eli Wallach is similarly wasted. THE DEEP - occasionally fun, but mostly turgid and padded endlessly.

"The Deep" is an interesting film. It has some issues. There doesn't seem to be a climax, and the film doesn't really explore where it could go. Structurally, it's a bit of a mess. It may even be one of the best remake contenders in Hollywood. "Into the Blue", which wasn't very good, was similar but really lacked all the characteristics that made "The Deep" a good movie. So what does make The Deep a good flick? "The Deep" is loaded with amazing under-water photography, and has undeniable, amazing atmosphere, good acting, and a few genuinely terrifying moments.Nolte is fantastic, and Robert Shaw nearly reprises his character and that characters' impact from 1975's Jaws. The film is intriguing and mysterious. Jacqueline Bisset is a fine, convincing addition, and there's a strange chemistry between the leads here. This film has style. IMO, it's criminally under-rated at 6.1. I know the film has some issues with the way the story ends, but seldom if ever will you come across a 6.1 film that is so eerie and atmospheric in design. The film has a look and feel that would be hard for any remake to duplicate. 76/100 A personal favorite and a great sleeper from the era.If you like this you might like: Sorceror(similar quality, different subject, but similar strengths and weaknesses), The Beach(not quite as good imo, but not bad at all), or Angel Heart(perhaps a touch better).
