WillSushyMedia This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
Srinivas G Phani The trailers and the buzz around the film is quite misleading. The film is not very dirty in its content nor are the dialogues very vulgar. They are just plain corny throughout. Also claimed is Vidya Balan's best performance to be her best. Well, maybe, but is the performance truly the best? Not likely. Of the year at least? Not at all.The Dirty Picture is a very very average film at best. It is not at all entertaining and tries hard to be serious about its subject matter. Milan Luthria certainly missed the mark this time. His Once Upon A Time in Mumbai was very moving, entertaining and far more interesting. Despite having a strong lead, and the great Naseeruddin Shah, this film never truly delivers what it promises – entertainment.Alright, Oh La La is one of the best filmed songs of the decade, if not the best, but that's about it. Watch it on youtube and forget the film is what I suggest. The film never develops the character of Balan completely and doesn't allow her to breathe in one state either. The screenplay is very rushed at times and very lame otherwise, more so in the second half. Her rise to stardom is not at all convincing from what is shown but Balan definitely makes it believable. Her whipping scene is very stupid but Balan makes that watchable. Same goes to her downfall, all that song and dance with Shakila and the suicide in the end. The film never examines her life properly. It just rushes through the scenes with Balan faking an attitude while deeply lamenting within.Vidya Balan, in my opinion, has a very limited range. There is a few set of characters she can play and I would certainly not cast her for Silk Smitha. Smitha was a sensation, she had it in her eyes – Balan doesn't. Yet, Balan thoroughly enjoys herself on her ride to stardom and entertains somewhat. But she gets many scenes wrong. The award scene, perhaps the biggest scene in the film, being one of them. Balan looks extremely sad and extremely maniac when required to but never fully blends them, something that her character does according to me. Naseeruddin Shah gets it somewhat right and annoyed me very bad, just as he was supposed to. Tushar Kapoor and Emran Hashmi seem very forced. The Dirty Picture is one the whole best avoided coz it is just another dirty (read horrible) picture.
Sandeep Gupta Those titillating promos were just tip of the iceberg. The real part was every award winning performance of Vidya Balan. She takes the steps way ahead of its competition and makes her portrayal of southern siren Silk Smitha look believable and commendable. Apart from Vidya, other casting is also chosen very carefully. Naseruddin Shah is reliable as always. Tushar Kapoor fits for his role. Emraan Hashmi looks charming and his scenes with Vidya in second half are touching and subtle. Milan Luthria captains the whole movie like an expert. Background score is rocking and dialogues are clap worthy. However, movie is not without its flaws, there are one or two extra songs and scenes which could have been removed at the editing table. Overall, movie will be remembered for brave performance of Vidya Balan and some of its one-liners said deliciously by Emraan Hashmi.
silvan-desouza OUATIM brought to life the real stories of Haji Mastaan/Dawood Ibrahim and the film was a superhit and then after Ragini MMS Ekta comes back with Milan to give another superb film The Dirty Picture. The film again has Emraan Hashmi who is going through his best phase after blockbuster MURDER 2 and cast alongside Vidya Balan in a never before avtaar while Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar too are brought in. The film depicts the true life of Silk Smitha who was a big star in South films and known for her bold films and dance numbers, For Hindi moviegoers she also starred in SADMA(1983) which was a remake of a south film with same cast and team. Back to TDP, The film depicts the life of Silk Smitha, perhaps not entirely but mostly Such films are treated as half slice of life while half fiction The film depicts the rise and fall of the Sexy actress just like it showed Haji Mastaan's life in OUATIM The film starts off well, the manner in which Silk comes up is well depicted, her scenes with Naseeruddin Shah and the twist when she feels cheated and then her scene with Tusshar is fabulous The love/hate story between Emraan/Vidya is superb and well handled too One flaw perhaps is that the Tusshar-Vidya love story is sometimes too comical intentional or not no idea The interval point is superb while the second half too has several interesting scenes like Vidya taking revenge from Naseer and then the entire showdown after the Honeymoon song, The love story between Emraan/Vidya too is well handled and the climax is superb tooDirection by Milan Luthria is fabulous Music is superb, Ooh la La is superb and well picturised, it is reminiscent of the song Naino mein Sapna from Himmatwala(which itself was a south remake) Ishq Sufiana is superb too Dialogues again are superb just like OUATIM Art direction and deco deserves good marks for recreating 80's Vidya Balan was seen in a bold avtar in ISHQIYA but here she outdoes herself, her portrayal of Silk is flawless, she carries the look and the attire with utmost care, Her dialogue delivery, expressions are topnotch. Emraan Hashmi excels in his role of Abraham, it is surprising that the actor is now working with greater directors and actors Tusshar Kapoor is restrained but still something is missing at places Naseeruddin Shah is flawless in his role as always Anju Mahendru is fabulous, while the rest are all superb Rajesh Sharma seen after NOKJ and Ishqiya is superb here again
cobipal Me being a South Indian does know that Silk Smitha the girl that Vidya portrayed in the movie was totally DIRTY and this Vidya Balan has done to boundless perfection. It couldn't have been done better than any other. Kudos to the Director for shooting vividly and seamlessly the life of South India. I must say it was ENTERTAINMENT, ENTERTAINMENT AND "MORE" ENTERTAINMENT. Naseruddin Shah(hope I got the name right) played his role brilliantly mimicking that of a South Indian Tamil actor. The oldies and the old times come to light in this movie and you kind of feel nostalgic, that is if you have seen them oldies. Brings back memories of Silk for me in no better way than this picture "THE DIRTY PICTURE"
