Bardlerx Strictly average movie
Phonearl Good start, but then it gets ruined
Janae Milner Easily the biggest piece of Right wing non sense propaganda I ever saw.
Tyreece Hulme One of the best movies of the year! Incredible from the beginning to the end.
ezrapound8 Kevin Wilson's extraordinary book deserved much better. Changes to the story seemed arbitrary, such as changing the location. The book features a quirky artistic family in the Cumberland Plateau of Tennessee. The southern culture and the unspoken but very present Bible Belt offer an important counterpoint to the parents' commitment to art and ability to tune out or reject anything that is not in their definition of art.Bateman and Kidman were much older than the characters and while Christopher Walken was the perfect choice, the weird comedic genius he brought was not utilized in the film at all. Almost as if the director had no thought other than transposing (rather than translating or adapting) it onto celluloid -- the film offered nothing to a terrific story.
Reno Rangan I still remember the Jason Bateman's feature film debute as a director a couple of years ago. He really did good and now this is his second. It was adapted from the book of the same name that tells the story of a brother and sister who begin to investigate their mysteriously disappeared parents. With some flashbacks, which reveals how these two grew up with their famous prank artist parents. When I saw the opening scene, I was really excited and thought the film would be like this throughout. And then obviously it changed its course towards the mystery surrounding parts that set in the present time. But I did not feel those developments were bad, except the final act, especially the ending surely a let down. Actually, it was not bad, only expected a better one.The story certainly created the atmosphere where the viewers begin their predictions. That's the issue, because it failed to deliver par with the audience anticipation. Like maybe some smart twist or the edgy scenes before concluding would have done good.Jason Bateman and Nicole Kidman with their multiple roles like actors, producers et cetera should have been the hefty load, but I think they managed well. Though the film was okay type, had its moments that did not last very long. I don't know what the novel fans say about the film, but I think I dissatisfied with the source material. Overall once watchable film, especially without any extraordinary expectations, because it is a simple drama with some amount of comedy and suspense.6/10
gradyharp Jason Bateman directs this little jewel of a film based on the novel of the same name by Kevin Wilson and adapted for the screen by David Lindsay-Abaire. Bateman also stars in the film as an integral part of a sterling cast of actors. It is refreshing to see a film that discusses all forms of art – acting, painted/composed art, music and performance art – in a manner that introduces the audience to forms of art they may not have witnessed. Bateman is a deft director and brings all the subtleties as well as the well-timed humor and dysfunctional family strains together for an educational as well as an entertaining movie.Annie (Nicole Kidman) and Baxter (Jason Bateman) Fang, the adult children of the controversial husband and wife conceptual performance art couple famous for their quirky macabre public performances (Maryann Plunkett and Christopher Walken), have never got over the fact that their parents kept using them during their childhood in their often gory and disturbing satirical public performances (Annie and Baxter as children are played by Mackenzie Brooke Smith and Jack McCarthy and as teenagers by Taylor Rose and Kyle Donnery). They often clash with their now elderly parents over this and blame them for their problems in their adult life. However, the two become worried when they're told by the police that their parents have gone missing during their trip outside of town. The brother considers the possibility that something horrible might have happened to them, but the sister is convinced that it's just another one of their stupid games or twisted conceptual performances. She convinces him that they should go and look for them themselves.Adding considerably to the cast are Harris Yulin as the parents, mentor, Kathryn Hahn and Jason Butler Harner as the young parents of Adam and Baxter, Linda Edmond in a very key and surprising role, and other fine cameos. The significant musical score is by Carter Burwell (and Beethoven). In all this is a fine film awaiting recognition by an audience. Intellectual, funny, and touching – it has it all. Highly Recommended.
namashi_1 Based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Kevin Wilson, 'The Family Fang' by Jason Bateman, is a wonder of a film. No kidding, this is a sublime film, about family & the importance of parenthood. This One's A Near-Perfect Comedy-Drama!'The Family Fang' Synopsis: A brother and sister return to their family home in search of their world famous parents who have disappeared.'The Family Fang' is a quietly devastating film, on how important it is to be a good parent, in order to raise their children sane. In here, the unsettled protagonists (Bateman, Nicole Kidman, in Pure Oscar Peak Form), are a victim of unusual parents (Christopher Walken & Maryann Plunkett, both brilliant). They are not your regular parents, they are attention seekers, who find Art in the Reality of Life. They put up gigs (not even one of which shows any signs of entertainment, but of rather fright) & they swear to live by it, in extreme measures. Its a devastating journey to see this family so distort, torn between love, commitment & art.David Lindsay-Abaire's Adapted Screenplay is superior in all terms. 'The Family Fang' is essentially a comedy, with some dark, dramatic undertones. I was engrossed & heartbroken by the struggle of its scarred protagonist. 'The Family Fang' is about artistry gone too far & how a family is only a family, when you treat it like one. Bateman's Direction is Brilliant. He takes charge of the narrative & doesn't let you go. Take a bow, Mr.Batemen! The Fangs aren't particularly normal, but nor is their journey. Don't Miss It!
