good back-story, and good acting

A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.

After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

I'm just going to say it now rather than later: I enjoy the Land Before Time sequels (with a couple of exceptions). The first of those sequels is The Great Valley Adventure and it's one of the ones that I like. I don't think it's as good as the first movie, which I regard as second only to The Secret NIMH as far as animated films, but I do think that The Great Valley Adventure is still allot of fun. One thing I will say is that while Cera has the same voice as in the first movie, Littlefoot and Ducky have different voices. Not that different, but different enough to be noticeable (especially in the case of the latter). Still, the new Ducky (Heather Hogan) is a worth replacement for Judith Barsi. The songs aren't the best Land Before Time songs (which in my opinion are to be found in The Stone Of Cold Fire), but they're still enjoyable. I especially like the song Eggs because of all the funny dialogue between Ozzie and Strut, who are hilarious even when not singing and play a big role in why Struthiomimus is ranked among my favourite dinosaurs. Chomper is just plain adorable and the animation, while not quite on the level of the original, is crisp and bright.

I liked the original Land Before Time and I considered it as one of Don Bluth's best films in the 1980s along with Anastasia (1997). I saw this and the rest of the sequels as a child and I liked them, but in terms of having been grown up as a young adult (I'm 18 this year), I think that some of them were decent (with TOTGG, SOSR, SOCF, and GLM as the best) and some that are awful (IOTT and TWOF) and this one is also good, but not as great as the original was.I'll get to the negatives. The story's predictable and lacked heart at it's best. The dialog is quite unnecessary and the songs are extremely forgettable (with Eggs as the exception, that was pretty good). There's also the fact that it's quite short. However, it does have some nice animation despite it's average editing and some of the characters are likable enough. I also liked listening to the same music from the original and has some of the best peril ever with it's moments with the sharp-teeth. Ozzy and Strut, although not the greatest villains, are decent and funny at the same time. The main characters were good, especially Ducky, but the only character that I liked the most was Chomper because he was so adorable and the part where he and Littlefoot say goodbye to each other was so touching.Overall, despite it's lack of heart to the original and it's predictable story, The Land Before Time II is a very decent sequel to a classic from the late 80s. I'm sure kids will like it, but for others, stick to the original.

I'm a big fan of The Land Before Time Series. I think they're better sequels than the All Dogs Go to Heaven sequels even though I'm kind of upset that Don Bluth didn't have any involvement in them because I think he's a wonderful animator and storyteller. In this sequel Littlefoot and his friends after reaching the Great Valley sneak off one night because they're upset of their parents treating them like babies. While they're talking about their parents they witness two egg thieves named Ozzy and Strut steal an egg from Ducky and Spike's nest and chase them into the Mysterious Beyond but when they get the egg they realize that it's not theirs and wait for it to hatch. The egg hatches into a baby sharptooth in which Littlefoot names Chomper and he and his friends raise Chomper but soon Chomper's Parents arrive in the Great Valley and Littlefoot and his friends must return him to them before their parents close the opening to the Mysterious Beyond! Filled with wonderful characters, animation, and songs (My favorite being Peaceful Valley) Land Before Time 2 Great Valley Adventure is a great sequel any of the Land Before Time fans can enjoy! 10 out of 10!

My Take: Decent straight-to-video effort. Granted, sparks won't fly freely in the direct-to-video sequel THE LAND BEFORE TIME II: THE GREAT VALLEY ADVENTURE, but it's good enough to satisfy your kids hunger for fun. It's a film where you could just leave the kids and allow yourself to do something else. It's harmless, family movie, which, surprisingly, I found decent.Like all direct-to-video efforts, expect it to have a low-quality plot, weak characterizations and childish situations. But with all it's low shots, you can just look in your child's eyes and see how you rate the film. I remember watching this non-stop sequels over and over again when I was a kid, in other words, I was a big fan of all this stuff. But know, THE LAND BEFORE TIME II has dated badly. Now, I remember how inferior the new plot is to the original's plot. But, rating as a kid flick, it's something to keep the kids busy. It's a bit better than the other sequels that followed.By the end, upon seeing the eyes of the kids, you decide what rating you'll give to the film, but I give it, at least ***, a high rating for a film that isn't that good on quality. Nevertheless, it provides as much fine fun to kids and as decent enough as I remember.Video movie rating: *** out of 5.
