Philippa All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.
mjshenkenberg I rarely to never leave a movie feeling wowed. This movie was an exception; this was such a lovely and moving film. The characters were hauntingly beautiful as was there love story, filled with so much history that slowly unfolds seamlessly throughout the film. This movie made me laugh, and evoked so many other feelings. The critics interestingly enough missed the gem that this movie is.
MartinHafer When I saw this film recently listed on Netflix, it sounded like a cute roadtrip movie. After all, in the summary, it says "They recapture their passion for life and their love for each other on a road trip that provides revelation and surprise right up to the very end." . What I did not realize was that the film is all about death, Alzheimers and assisted suicide. Because of this, you really should be aware that this is NOT a comedy but a very dark film....very dark indeed. It's also very painful to watch...so beware! When the story begins, an elderly couple unexpectedly leaves their home. Their son and daughter are at wits end...and you really wonder why they and the neighbor are so upset at their leaving. The scene then switches to the old folks, John and Ella Spencer (Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren) and they're on a road trip in a very old RV...and for much of the time the film seems quirky and charming. However, after a bit you realize that John has severe dementia and later you realize that Ella is dying. What's next? Well, it sure won't be pleasant!!This is a great example of a very well acted film which I doubt most folks would really want to see. After all, talking about our mortality isn't exactly a crowd pleaser! Plus, some elements of the story might offend many and a few pieces didn't make a lot of sense (such as both nursing home portions)....but that's something you'd need to see for yourself. So, the bottom line is that you might wanna think twice about seeing this one...even if it is very well made. And, if you do see it, try to see it with someone and please take care of yourself...watching the film can be very difficult emotionally. By the way, the title "Leisure Seeker" is a reference to the name they've given the old RV.
capone666 The Leisure SeekerThe best way to extinguish a house fire in an RV is to drive the vehicle in to the nearest lake. Sadly, the sightseers in this dramedy would just end up bickering over directions. Before Alzheimer's deteriorates her husband's (Donald Sutherland) mind, the equally ill Ella (Helen Mirren) plans to take him to visit the home of his favourite author in Florida. But to get down there from Boston, they must swipe their old recreational vehicle from dry-dock without their concerned kids noticing. En route to Hemingway's house Ella ends up learning new things about herself, her spouse and her children. While this timely adaptation of the 2009 novel is superlatively acted and brimming with heart tugging, tear-jerking, humorous moments between the mature lovebirds, the conventional script, uninspired direction, and general lack of purpose undermines the overall experience. Moreover, every RVer drives around like they don't remember where they're going. Yellow Lightvidiotreviews.blogspot.ca
BasicLogic Well, while seeking your sunset leisure, your guys had polluted all the way from the very start to the end. In order to dramatize this bore-you-to-death film and tried to find some match from what the story described, you guys purposely found a big polluter RV to get the effect of two old geezers on a RV with busted engine that burned oil en route. We saw it blew out blue or black smog from its rear exhaust pipe, polluted the air with heavy smog and forced lot of people to inhale anywhere it went. What a terrible scene that almost choked me at the same time during watching. The dialog between the old couple not only uninteresting but also awkwardly contrite. Think about it, if you yourself were like the wife who still got a working brain and your hubby got early stage dementia, often lost in his own world of nothingness, so you had to keep talking to him, almost non-stop, trying to get him focus and didn't travel to the forth dimension, and your conversation would be kept interesting? Give me a break! The only high point of this film was when they met two young lowlifes trying to rob them, other than that, there's nothing worth keeping your interest. The dialog between the old couple with their adult son and daughter.....you think it would be interesting enough to keep you interested? NO! The only thing I'd like to complement on this movie is the rareness of some independent film makers still had the guts and interest making some least commercialized films, without the least use of stunt men, the least CGI special effect, without explosions, not too many dirty words that most movies churning out Hollywood, the F word seemed to be the major dialog in every scene. But shooting a movie with almost bare-bone like story, especially with one of the two main characters always seemingly in never-never land, you do need a huge heart to embrace it, to prove how kind and decent person you are. Me, a fat chance.
