Allison Davies The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.
classicsoncall There's probably a reason the film makers didn't go for the Lucy/Ricky format for this picture but I'm not aware of it. Just like their 1956 film "Forever, Darling", an opportunity was probably missed by the players not using their well regarded TV show identities. And to be honest, even though this is considered a comedy, I didn't find much humor in the story other than an infrequent lapse into Lucy's TV character as was seen in the trailer trying to prepare a meal while her husband was driving.Another impression I got from the movie was what the reaction might have been at the time from the trailer industry (they weren't recreational vehicles back then). Not for anything, but the film portrayed owning and driving one in such a bad light that it almost felt like an anti-trailer commercial for it's run of nearly two hours. Granted, this was made a long time ago, but you have to wonder if some trailer executives sitting around their desks might have wrung their hands over the way their product was being presented. The thing that really blew me away though was the way Nicky (Desi Arnaz) had to juggle his finances to make the whole project affordable. The trailer and a new car to haul it set him back a whole seven and a half grand!!! and later on, when he had to have the trailer towed away from the muddy trail they got stuck in, the towing, labor and wash set him back a whole forty six dollars! I'm starting to get nostalgic for the good old days again.Well I know Lucille Ball fans who cherished "I Love Lucy" will hold this picture in high regard as evidenced by other reviews here, but take the principal players out of the cast and I think it becomes an entirely different picture. I enjoyed the TV series myself, which makes it almost painful to tread on critical ground for this film, but I prefer to remember Lucy and Ricky as the much more entertaining Ricardos. You can pass that piccalilli now.
shominy-491-652355 "The Long, Long Trailer" is an absolutely perfect movie: Lucy & Desi are so multi-talented, utterly timeless and endlessly enjoyable in every scene! The writing is clever and funny, the direction is flawless, the scenery and music are fantastic. The 1950s provided some of the absolute best in entertainment - not to mention, the most awesomely-designed cars, the coolest clothes, and the neatest home furnishings - all of which we see in this wonderful film. (It's unheard of today but classic duos like Lucy & Desi, Jackie Gleason & Art Carney, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, Tony Randall & Jack Klugman, Bud Abbott & Lou Costello, Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy, Gilligan/Bob Denver & Skipper/Alan Hale, Jr., Andy Griffith & Don Knotts, were so talented that they could carry entire TV shows or films on their own!) We never tire of watching this movie - it's a perfect time capsule of the Fun & Fabulous '50s!
tavm Just watched this on the DailyMotion site. I wouldn't recommend watching it there as there were off-sync scenes after about 15 minutes which never went back to the right sync. Despite that, I managed to enjoy some of the slapstick scenes once I managed to put them together in my head like both times Lucy tried to fix something on the stove. And hearing her and Desi singing "Breezin' Along with the Breeze" was a treat to listen to. I also liked that scene with Ms. Ball and Majorie Main concerning the former's foot. And all those scenic views as they travel the road were awe-inspiring even on the computer screen. So in summary, I probably would give a higher rating to The Long, Long Trailer if I had watched it more proper-like than what I just described at the beginning of this review but I did enjoy it just the same.
dougdoepke Because fans stayed away from this film in droves, Lucy and Desi made only one more movie together. Too bad, because this film is far superior to the series. Credit should go to veteran director Vincente Minelli and his sure hand in balancing the material. Against all odds: Ball's slapstick is drained of usual shrillness, Desi's star is allowed to shine, situation is raised above personality, and peripheral crowd scenes are heightened to hilarious commentary on busybody middle America. In fact, this is one of few 50's movies to capture spirit of a rising middle class: the buoyant optimism, the credit card dependency, the aping of upper class tastes. All is accomplished, nevertheless, with an underlying sweetness that might not be expected from two overaged stars then in the process of subduing the tigers of TV land. Moreover, the choice of a trailer gimmick for the comedy setting was an inspired one. A true little gem and document of its time.
