The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human

1999 "A How-To-Do-It Guide."

David Hyde Pierce, playing an alien (credited as infinity-cubed in the opening credits), narrates a courtship in a late-20th century American city as an extraterrestrial nature documentary. The relationship "footage" is played straight, while the voice-over (with its most often wildly inaccurate theories) and elaborate visual metaphors add comedy.

NekoHomey Purely Joyful Movie!
BelSports This is a coming of age storyline that you've seen in one form or another for decades. It takes a truly unique voice to make yet another one worth watching.
Jenna Walter The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
Taha Avalos The best films of this genre always show a path and provide a takeaway for being a better person.
aeyrhed caught this movie late night on some movie channel or another years ago, didn't expect much from it but by the end my roommates and i were in tears. it was so goofy and just uber. in the years since, i've been unable to find anyone who carries it or has even seen it, but if you can find it GRAB IT. innovative, original, just remarkably different in a very light hearted fun playful way.i normally don't hold much high esteem for carmen electra's acting skills. i love David hyde pierce, his narration was great. casting was actually really good considering some of the people they chose for the film.its done documentary style, or perhaps more like a nature show. the tone of the flick if i remember correctly was something like those mating habits of wild animals shows but with humans instead of animals and the "alien's" ideas on the particular purposes of some of the things we do were really funny. hope you all find it as enjoyable as we did
rprather This was an original movie with good acting. There were some humorous scenes as well as some sexy scenes. For as many times as they were getting it on, it would have been nice to see a little more skin from the lovely Carmen Electra. Some parts of the movie including the ending were a little predictable, and some of the predicaments the male gets into were a little too convenient or seemed to be the stereotypical behavior of males in general rather than what you would expect from this specific character from what he had already shown up to those points. The "Sperm Guys" were hilarious and ingenious to add. Overall, this movie was good for a few laughs, some brief nudity, an original concept, and watching a relationship go full circle from meeting all the way to marriage and children.
KGitt44498 This movie is the low-budget (under $1,000,000) first-time effort by Jeff Abugov. It is reasonably well-done, and moderately entertaining. It has at least 3 recognizable names in it, David Hyde Pierce ("Frazier"), just-pre-stardom Lucy Liu ("Ally McBeal", "Charlie's Angels"), and Carmen Electra (from "MTV"). For fans of Carmen's breasts, they are unclothed and briefly viewable a few times.POSSIBLE SPOILERThe part of the overall concept that I liked best was the "sperm-men", who were track-runners (all dressed in white with rubber swimming caps), who appeared from time to time. Depending on the method of birth-control being used (or not used), they would run into big foam rubber pads, or get shot by the "sperminator", or finally clear the high-jump...END SPOILERWhat keeps this movie from being better is the mis-placed narration view-point. Ostensible an alien observing the human condition, it is too much like a "Wild Kingdom" episode. There are references to "huts" (apartments) and "vegetable covering" (clothes) etc, that do not work too well. By using these and other similar references, it gives the impression that the alien has been watching our documentaries and using our phrases from the 1950's. Obviously, an advanced alien observer would frame his report in his own style, not ours.Jeff Abugov's commentary is entertaining. Reluctantly I can only give the movie a "just-above-average" score. It should have been better. The DVD has an entertaining commentary by Jeff Abugov. Too bad there are no bloopers or deleted scenes on this $20+ disk.
marxtevens If you are old enough to have seen "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (1972)" and enjoyed it, then this one is worth viewing, too. David Hyde Pierce's observations of human mating through the birth of the cub, provide a hilariously misinformed view of human dating behavior and sexual reproduction, and birth. However, those of you who would like to date members of the opposite sex, would be well advised to take notes of Mackenzie Astin's character, Billy, who's behavior and attitude towards women is definitely grown up. He is nervous, real, and amazed at his good fortune, as well as scared of this relationship and afraid of being labeled by his co-worker.Carmen Electra's J. Smith, one of 15 pages of entries in the LA phone book has something to teach as well, "I might as well try a nice guy." apparently learning something from her previous encounters with other members of the male gender. She is also intelligent and focused (working for a company to develop a system for the blind to see), strong (was that karate or kung fu?), and caring (for Billy and others).I've been through all of these events and maybe that's why I can empathize with Billy as my mate does with Jenny, especially at transition during birth of our cubs. This is still a light film, but it is entertaining.
