Jerry Welbach, a reluctant bagman, has been given two ultimatums: The first is from his mob boss to travel to Mexico and retrieve a priceless antique pistol, known as "the Mexican"... or suffer the consequences. The second is from his girlfriend Samantha to end his association with the mob. Jerry figures alive and in trouble with Samantha is better than the more permanent alternative, so he heads south of the border.

Phonearl Good start, but then it gets ruined
Anoushka Slater While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

Staci Frederick Blistering performances.
betty dalton What is a gangster fairytale? The Mexican is such a hilariously good mix of funny romcom talk and funny action scenes. Topped with some lovely romantic happy ending, this movie is just do die for if you wish for a feel good movie that will lift you up. Especially recommended for the girls and boys if they are on a datenight. It is the ultimate romantic AND funny gangster movie, that will make your girl crawl into your arms purring with affection. It worked for me.The story really doesnt matter although it is very clever and funny. In short: Brad Pitt plays a dumb ass who doesnt want to lose his girlfriend Julia Roberts. Add a lot of hilarious gangsters and you have "The Mexican". It's a funny romcom story put in a funny gangster's movie. And it mixes perfectly. And the hilarious and brilliant comedic acting of Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts make this flick really a treat. Add to that grandmasters in acting like James Gandalfino and Gene Hackman who play the serious parts and you have got a precious comedy gangsta gem!Seen it more than a dozen times and it keeps getting better. What is it about this sweet and funny story that is so endearing to me? The humor and dialogues are terrific. The romance is just the right amount for a "gangster" movie. The story is fresh and original. And the final direction by Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Carribean) is just perfect. What more can one desire? 10 out of 10 for a new romcom gangsta classic or what I like to call a "gangster's fairytale"...
2karl- so brad Pitt plays a character called jerry who is slightly demitted who is a small time crook this film is quiet good as I read loads of reviews about how slow it was this film is like a screwball dark comedy from the man who gave us pirates of the Caribbean also JK Simmons he is so funny cleaning up after Brad Pitt mistake the story of this gun is a legendary in Mexico so because so many people want this people go to any length to get it so plenty of killings funny story and great acting make this a 7/10 film and cue the back story to this antique gun is brilliant Julia Roberts plays a bumbling person who wants to go places but keeps getting in the way of things when deals are being done
ellis-man Pitt stars as a goofy mobster, Jerry, given an ultimatum by each his boss and his girlfriend. He chooses life and heads South to Mexico in order to retrieve an extremely valuable, yet cursed gun. This plot is refreshing, unpredictable, and darkly humorous. If you are looking for an action/comedy and something new then this is a movie for you. You can't help but enjoy Jerry's awkward mannerisms and empathize with a multi-dimensional character.Roberts is a let-down in this film. The alternating plots will keep you engaged as Jerry struggles with himself and the supposed curse, paralleling Samantha's growing relationship with the gay hit-man who keeps her hostage. However when Roberts and Pitt are together the chemistry just doesn't seem to be there. The juxtaposition between the story behind "The Mexican" to Pitt's and Roberts' characters was twisting and pretty cool at the end. The plot does tend to fall off the pace slightly but maintains itself as fun and unpredictable throughout.
Desertman84 The Mexican is a romantic comedy film that features Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts together with James Gandolfini,J. K. Simmons and an uncredited Gene Hackman. The screenplay has a plot that is an unusual mixture of romantic comedy and road movie. It was originally intended to be filmed as an independent production without major motion picture stars, but Roberts and Pitt, who had for some time been looking for a project they could do together, learned about it and decided to make it. It was directed by Gore Verbinski. In the story,a clumsy criminal is put in a position where he not only has to save his own skin, but that of his girlfriend in this comedy with strong undercurrents of romance. Jerry Welbach is a low-level Mafia "mechanic" whose ineptitude is countered by frequent bursts of dumb luck. Jerry's girlfriend Samantha wants him to get out of the business, and after his latest blunder lands capo Arnold Margolese in jail, so does mid-level crime kingpin Bernie Nayman. But Bernie insists that Jerry do one last errand for the mob before they let him find employment elsewhere -- he has to go to Mexico and recover a rare and very valuable pistol, which is said to be cursed. While Samantha objects to Jerry taking the assignment, he isn't in much of a position to argue; Jerry heads south of the border, while Samantha, in a huff, sets out for Las Vegas. Once in Mexico, Jerry finds the pistol easily enough, but making his way back to the States proves to be an unexpected challenge. Meanwhile, Jerry's superiors want insurance that he'll return with the goods, so they hire Leroy, a hit-man, to kidnap Samantha and hold her hostage until Jerry comes back. However, Samantha and Leroy quickly strike up a friendship, and she soon learns the gunman has a sensitive side he doesn't show to the world -- along with a few other secrets. The Mexican marked the first screen pairing for mega-stars Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt -- though, given the film's narrative arc, they play only a handful of scenes together. That made it less interesting just like the story - which was overbearing and boring at the same time. The comedy did not provide too many laughs and the romance between Jerry and Samantha was least interesting.Despite of the presence of the mega-stars,this is one movie that I mildly recommend as it falls short in entertainment.
