Solemplex To me, this movie is perfection.
Protraph Lack of good storyline.
Micah Lloyd Excellent characters with emotional depth. My wife, daughter and granddaughter all enjoyed it...and me, too! Very good movie! You won't be disappointed.
Raymond Sierra The film may be flawed, but its message is not.
Lori Sloan I think this is a pretty good telling of the nativity story. The good things about the movie is not only does it make you realize how violent a time it was, but how unjust. People had no "civil rights"... King Herod did exactly as he pleased... guards coming into your house at night and killing your sons... it must have been horrifying.Oscar Isaac was great as Joseph, who was very loving towards Mary... he took on the role of father to Jesus once he got over the initial shock of Mary's condition. That having been said, there were a few things I was not happy with.I wish Keisha Castle-Hughes had spoken up more... I mean, her voice is hard to hear and her accent was a bit hard to understand. Also, he did not portray Mary in the way I've always imagined her. I thought she would be a bit more lively... that she'd have a happier air about her, but I guess that is up for debate.I wish there had been more of a look into how life was at that time. And I would have love to know how old Elizabeth was when she had John, but I don't guess we'll ever know that for sure.
raymondmerritt What a pleasant surprise this sleeper turned out to be. I thought I had seen every (American) film made about this story and was still waiting for a realistic one to be made. Upon seeing this film, my wait was over. We bought this DVD and frequently lend it out to anyone willing to take the time to watch it. In my opinion, it is on my "Not to be missed" list.We just found out that the executive producer is Toby Emmerich, who was also executive producer "Hair Spray" and writer of "Frequency". Mr. Emmerich now has a new avid fan.Congrats go to Priscilla John, Mindy Marin, Juliette Ménager and Shaila Rubin for casting that was perfect. Olivia Hussey was my favorite "Mary" until Keisha Castle-Hughes usurped her. Oscar Isaac was also the most believable "pursuer of Mary / heart-broken reactor to her pregnancy" that I've witnessed. Hiam Abbass's portrayal of cognitive dissonance over who she knows her daughter to be and the reality of the pregnancy was compelling. If you have any interest in this story at all, please do yourself the favor of carving out the 101 minutes to spend with this rendition of "the Holy family".
Leofwine_draca Having recently seen and watched the BBC 2010 adaptation of THE NATIVITY, I was eager to find out how this Hollywood production value compared. It turns out to be even better, thanks to exceptional production values and a real resonance in terms of storytelling that brings both the era and the characters to life. The filmmakers don't go so far as to have the characters speaking in their original languages like Mel Gibson did for PASSION OF THE Christ, but everything else looks and feels great, particularly Oscar Isaac's and Keisha Castle-Hughes's very human Joseph and Mary. The backdrops and scenery are both lavish, with delicately-balanced humour and support from acting heavyweights like Ciaran Hinds.Altogether it's a touching, moving viewing experience and one that should appeal to Christian viewers everywhere, refreshingly free of the interplanetary nonsense that marred the BBC version (where I kept expecting Professor Brian Cox to pop up and explain the science behind the alignments of the planets or some such).
inicola2-1 I am a believer in the Christ and naturally longed for a moderning telling of this wonderful event. I was anxious that people were starting to get interested in doing films like this one for a new generation of people. It was important for me to see this kind of treatment of the holy story. So many times in the recent past the story of Christianity is mired in bad press and it was essential that people be allowed to express this nativity story with natural wonder. I was glad that they cast Mary as a minority young woman. I understand that some experts believe that Mary was about 16 at the time of Jesus birth. The scenery and the aspect of lives in the time period were very interesting. The blue hues in the filming make the settings seem somber often, one thing that I wondered about how the people of the time saw the events that are now history.I loved this movie and think that no matter where you are in your walk to your journeys end one would enjoy this timeless story, thank you Catherin Hardwick for having the courage to do this movie.
