Not even bad in a good way

It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.

Actress is magnificent and exudes a hypnotic screen presence in this affecting drama.

An old-fashioned movie made with new-fashioned finesse.

I have no personal experience of the dark worlds of espionage and the so-called "security" services. It has intrigued me that the supposed lives and exploits of those who inhabit those worlds have been used to such an extent in books and in films. I have always suspected that the truth is probably too nasty and too boring to make really good box office. This is a film which probably gets closer to the truth of it all than any I have seen. It might be a little bit more violent and it might over emphasise how alone those sort of people are... but it has a feeling of "reality" which is reliably absent from so many in the genre. But that is not all. This film is so much more than a "bang, bang, woop, woop" espionage thriller. This is thanks to the writing, the setting and the performances from the actors. We start with Cusack, inhabiting a grey world with "no life outside" and Akerman tantalising... and yet neither trying nor likely to succeed in re-connecting him with "life". It's not very long and there are no seismic shifts in their surroundings... even though quite a lot of stuff does go bang. Which means that the character development... and there is quite a bit of that... rests entirely on the two leads. It's subtle so don't be embarrassed if you miss it. They do a brilliant job and it's been a long time since I was inclined to applaud. It seems to me that this film is ultimately about redemption, primarily Cusack's but also Akerman's. If anything it's underplayed... but it's all the more effective because of that. I congratulate all those involved in making a film which allows you to care about the characters and which actually has something to say.

Finally, after a string of dreadful scripts, poor directing and outright silliness, Cusack gets a role he can sink his teeth into. His character, Emerson Kent, is a burned out black ops agent. The character is a dark, tortured soul and Cusack plays it magnificently. Malin Akerman also shines in her role as Katherine, an ebullient and somewhat naive cryptographer with issues of her own.The plot gets down to business very quickly and the pace of the film never really lets up. Kent lets you know right away that he's no nice guy, so it's accurate to say that there really aren't any good guys here. Kent only seems intent on doing the right thing despite his ruthless past. There are no car chases. There are a few well placed explosions. But enough gunfire and action to move this 90-minute flick forward at just the right pace. It is at times thrilling, at times poignant, and at times quite violent. What else could you ask for in an action thriller?

(Credit, IMDb) A disgraced black ops agent is dispatched to a remote CIA broadcast station to protect a code operator. Soon, they find themselves in a life-or-death struggle to stop a deadly plot before it's too late. What on earth was Cusack thinking? Cusack is one of my favorite actors. It's sad to see him languish in a humorless film like this one. I decided to watch this movie, solely because of Cusack's presence. I just have trouble believing that Cusack could go the STD route. This movie has very little action, and a cornucopia amount of uninteresting dialog. It's way too talky and humorless for its own good. Cusack & Malin Akerman had virtually no chemistry. Cusack phones it in, and looks bored to death. They try to give him this conflicted character, but it felt phony to me. I think he knew this was beneath him. This smells like a paycheck role for him. We all have bills to pay, but it's so disappointing to see him in something like this. Malin Akerman is also boring. Usually I find her lively, and very attractive, but she did nothing for me in this movie. Overall, I don't have a lot left to say. If you wanna cure your insomnia, this movie might do the trick1/10

There is only one really decent thing about this movie and that is the audio. The sound of liquid dropping and echoing at the start is cool, and each gunshot makes your heart jump. Excellent on a home theater. And HOME is where this movie should be watched, and also for free, and also if you have absolutely NOTHING to do and are really bored and can't find another movie to watch. Other than that, the girl who played Merdith (Iphone app designer -turned secret agent code cracker), from Watchmen, the girl with yellow black suit ( I didn't even know that's who played it) she fails at her performance, her lack of real emotion after getting a 3 inch piece of metal shrapnel embedded in her leg and then getting it awkwardly yanked out by Cusak with no anesthetic, it's just poor. Pointless movie. I fast-forwarded through it a few times and then just wanted to get it over with, if I was watching this in the movie theater I would leave part way through.
