Fluentiama Perfect cast and a good story
Sameer Callahan It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.
Stephanie There is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
valadasmarques I watch a lot of horror movies and it takes a lot to scare me. If you are afraid of ghosts and haunted houses and if you watch this one alone, with all the lights out, it will scare you.
MitchellCombden The Pact (2012) directed by Nicholas McCarthy is a modern diamond in the ruff. everything about this film is astounding. presumably produced under a small budget it is actually very impressive what McCarthy was able to accomplish here. what's even more impressive is that not only did he direct the movie but he also wrote it. the story that we are told here is paced and written with great diligence and seems as if it's written by a veteran screenwriter. this being McCarthy's first feature length effort only strengthens his name and makes me want to watch whatever pops up next in his filmography. so without further ado let's get into the details of what makes this film work as well as it does.as I've already mentioned, the script is an extremely important part of what makes the film work so well. while the movie is categorized as a horror movie primarily it also works as a great mystery with an interesting story-line. we are not fed much backstory at all and are forced to immerse ourselves into the mystery of what's going on. smartly written and paced well the story reveals what it needs to reveal at the right times and builds into an impressive and exhilarating ending sequence that truly is terrifying. though the ending is indeed the scariest and most tension filled part of the film, some more subtle scares are sprinkled throughout the run time and are all very effective and are not just there for the sake of the scare. each of these scenes actually play into the story and make the end product that much more cohesive.another great strength of the film would be the camera work. specifically the scenes filmed inside the creepy house. narrow and dimly lit hallways are used to the fullest potential and are filmed in way that creates some genuine tension and suspense. this camera work is obviously complemented by some great lighting as well as a pulse pounding score that really delivers some chills. on a side note the movie is pretty light on blood and gore. while this isn't a real issue, i do feel as if a little more blood (not necessarily gore) could have been used to add more impact to certain scenes and make them more grisly and raw. but it really isn't a big issue. in terms of atmosphere there really isn't one. this would be one of the few real negatives in the film. it could have really benefited from a more prominent colour pallet or some atmospheric fog or lighting in the supernatural scenes. I've already mentioned the lighting and score are great but they don't really produce any CLASSIC scenes that are really memorable for the atmosphere created alone. those scenes are more memorable for solid camera work and suspense/tension rather than atmosphere. this doesn't break the film, it simply leaves something to be desired.the acting by our lead female actress named Caity Lotz is nothing short of wonderful. I was pleasantly surprised by her performance and her character was easy to get behind and root for. Mark Steger plays judas with ease, looking very creepy and unnerving in each scene he is in. Casper Van Dien is in the film as well as a supporting character but wasn't really utilized as much as he should have been. I am by no means a fan of his, but i am aware that he can be a competent actor within B-movie territory and could have been utilized as a supporting character of more importance, or not have been there at all. by more importance I mean in terms of character development rather than plot development. last but not least is Hayley Hudson. she does a good job as Stevie but once again could have be utilized much more. being in just the one scene she made an impact but McCarthy could have given her just a tad more screen time to beef up that scene and make it a little more intense. Overall The Pact is a memorable horror/mystery with a well written script, good acting from the lead actress, some great camera work, lighting, and a great score. the scares in the film are effective and there are many scenes of genuine suspense and tension. the only real negatives are the lack of true atmosphere, and the under utilization of the supporting characters.the verdict: 8.5/10
a_baron There is a sequel to this film which has the unimaginative title "The Pact II". That film is not better than its precursor, but the original is definitely worse. Low budget, the action taking place almost entirely in one house, it is difficult to know what to make of it. A young woman - a single mother with a young daughter - a mentally disturbed sister and a recently deceased mother who was far from an ideal parent, then strange things begin happening. Is she being haunted? It's either her or the house, but here's the good news, this is a friendly spirit, or at least one that is not malevolent. The bad news is that there is a genuinely malevolent presence in the house, one that appears to be terrestrial. The film is deliberately slow, attempting to build an atmosphere; this fails miserably. The climax is both unconvincing and implausible, even if you make allowance for the poltergeist. The best it has to offer is our attractive damsel, but even blonde hair and excessive cleavage can't rescue this one.
Daphne M Wow what a bad movie! Such an unprofessional production. For example: you hear a baby crying from inside the house. And you ask yourself - a baby? where is there a baby? and then you realize it's supposed to be the 4 year old girl crying. They think a 4 year old girl sounds like a one year old baby when she cries. The movie is so slow in unimportant parts, and so uninteresting nor scary on the other parts. What is "the pact" that the movie is named after? they never say, you can only guess. What happened to the missing characters? Who knows. This was such a time waste.
