PlatinumRead Just so...so bad
Phonearl Good start, but then it gets ruined
GarnettTeenage The film was still a fun one that will make you laugh and have you leaving the theater feeling like you just stole something valuable and got away with it.
invisibleunicornninja This movie is very entertaining and effective. The animation is very well done, the story is interesting and funny, and the characters are well portrayed. There are some really dumb moments that hold this movie back, and it does get a bit boring at times, but overall I would recommend this movie. Be warned, miscommunication is used as a plot device several times. Not enough of them are funny, and I can see how that would piss you off.
EngAnglo What a massive disappointment. An adventure with scientists? Do me a favour!!!! The opportunity for a swashbuckling piratical caper is passed up in preference for yet another flimsy film where the central character is a glorified wimp played by hugh grant. And the second in command? Another wimpy character voiced by martin freeman. Don't even get me started on David tennant's Darwin, he must be rolling in his grave. For some reason, the better characters like Cutlass Liz and the real Pirate King are relegated to all too brief parts. Overall, this film's main characters are pathetic to the point of embarrassment and an insult to the title 'pirate'. The film is too long and I ended up hoping Queen Victoria would prevail as at least she displayed some mettle.
studioAT For me Aardman films can be split into two categories - the big smash hit films like the Wallace and Gromit film and Chicken Run and then the lesser films like Flushed Away and Arthur Christmas. Sadly this film falls into the latter category.Don't get me wrong, this film has a lot going for it. All the charm we have come to expect from this company is there in abundance and the voice cast is great with Hugh Grant and David Tennant being just two examples though it is strange why Salma Hayek doesn't get more of a mention.Sadly though there isn't enough story to pin all the madness onto and it starts to feel more like sketches around a theme rather than a complete film. It will no doubt entertain kids but for adults I think there are more entertaining Aardman films to view.
RocketeerFlyer Although I'm a fan of the "Wallace & Gromit" short films I must admit to being disappointed by the longer made feature films from Aardman Animation (Both "Chicken Run" & "Curse of the Wererabbit" left me a bit cold) so colour me surprised when I picked this up as an impulse buy, popped it into my machine and found myself simply shocked as to how much I enjoyed it.THE PIRATES in AN ADVENTURE with SCIENTISTS is without doubt the BEST British Animated Film of ALL-TIME and these Pirates would put up a great fight with most others.Hugh Grant is awesome as the Pirate Captain as is the hilarious Imelda Staunton as Queen Victoria.Your kids are gonna love the MONKEY too. This movie is always amusing and is filled with great humour & characters, the imagination of the makers runs riot in this film & the animation (mainly stop-motion in the same brilliant vain as Ray Harryhausen's) is nothing short of brilliant.Had I not made this impulsive buy I might have had to wait years to have seen this truly amazing film (it probably helps if your British or a fan of British culture but I still think the humour is World-Wide) Who would have thought a cheap impulse buy would have turned out to be one of my all-time favourite films...for I shall watch this MANY MANY MANY Times in the future as i'm sure there's tons of jokes, quips and in-jokes that I missed first time around.THIS IS A BEAUTY & Rates as one of the BEST Children's / Family Films I've ever seen.If your British expect to see this on Christmas Day on BBC1 probably around 2015 as it's one for ALL the Family to enjoy.WELL DONE AARDMAN ANIMATION....Any chance of a PIRATES 2? RocketeerFlyer Rating of an UP UP & AWAY 9/10
