Actuakers One of my all time favorites.
ReaderKenka Let's be realistic.
Tayloriona Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.
JonSnowsMother I've never seen the original Poseidon movie but after seeing that and the Wolfgang Petersen version i think i should avoid it no matter how good its supposed to be. When you look at this poor attempt of a remake why did the producers think they would succeed with this. It was poorly attempted very weak directing, cinematography and screenplay it was like a bunch of four year olds made a movie with a camera phone. Almost a dozen stupid stories are thrown in when the writers should have stuck to one story instead of all the ones thrown in. Another mistake was the idea of having a terrorist attack the original story was good enough about the tidalwave or whatever it was turning the ship upside down not a bloody bomb. But to look at the good sides of he film......Oh yeah their were non. Take my advice and don't watch this it should be hard to find and once you see it you find out why.
peterlonglongplong This appeared at first to be a joke. But I realized quickly that I was laughing for the wrong reasons. I critiqued another stupid remake recently (I can't remember which), but that one was actually so bad it was funny. This remake only took some of the story from the original and added a bunch of crap (I wish I could use that other word). The scenes that were copied from the original had no soul, no feeling, and just flowed past like people waiting in line at a urinal. The characters were dull and looked quite bored, except Steve. He looked like a desperate actor who paid to get his role in this movie so he could over-act. He might have unintentionally made some people laugh. I laughed a bit, but it wasn't happy laughter. It was absolutely disgusted laughter. As others here have said, the scenes outside of the ship killed any tension that might have helped this movie. A not quite white person being made into a terrorist (probably from the middle east) is one more example of racist Hollywood. Why does Hollywood almost always cast people with a particular physical racial look as being terrorists? The incredibly honorable military saviors from outside of the ship were obviously tools of propaganda for increasing the giving of our tax-dollars to the weapons industry. The moral majority must have also had a hand in this production, since the good looking blond who had sex with Steve's character dies in the symbolic "FIRES OF HELL". Of course, Steve doesn't join her there, since he now cares about 'family values'. He's the adulterer, but only the woman suffers the penalty, from our vengeful God. I'll summarize quickly. Realism is not there. How much can anyone enjoy a movie (that's already been made and is a classic) about natural disaster and people struggling to survive it, being remade into a movie about a terrorist disaster with a bunch of soul-free people, only a few being saved by our strong military. And, who would really care about any of the characters in this movie? Can Hollywood sink any lower.....Oh boy.... I shouldn't ask that. You know they will.
capricorn9 I am a totally big fan of the original film. Nothing could beat the effects or the star power that film had. When I heard there was a TV version coming out, I sort of got worried - then a second one for theatres and I really got worried!! I saw most of the TV one - tuned in a bit late - but had to sit through it to give it a chance. No tidal wave? Where are the famous characters? Terrorists? Then I went to see the movie release only because Sheila Allen (the nurse in the original and the Mayor's wife in Towering Inferno) and Irwin Allen productions were involved. That was a bit mistake. THAT one was a waste of celluloid. A month or so ago in a $6.98 DVD bin at WallMart I found the DVD of the TV version. The selling point for me was on the cover - 40 minutes of unseen footage - it said. The price was right so I risked the purchase. Today I had nothing to do, and came across it and watched it. I can now say that this time I DID enjoy it. If I sat back and looked at it as a film on its own and not a remake of a classic, it was somewhat enjoyable. I think that missing 40 minutes made all the difference. I still think that remakes like these are not worth the time, but this one, on it's own and with the missing footage, did make a decent drama in the disaster mode.
TxMike I got the wrong movie. I thought I was getting the recent theatrical remake of the old Poseidon Adventure, but I got this one instead. While it is not awful, it definitely has a 'made for TV' look and feel to it. There are some pretty seasoned actors in it --Adam Baldwin, Rutger Hauer, Steve Guttenberg (hasn't aged well), Bryan Brown, C. Thomas Howell, Peter Weller -- but they can only do so much with the script. In most respects this is the traditional Poseidon story. A cruise ship full of happy passengers gets into a bind and soon everyone finds themselves upside down. The movie then becomes a test to see who can survive. The 'twist' which is a reflection of the mood of the world right now -- terrorism being responsible for the mishap. Not a very bad movie, just not a very good one.SPOILERS. The terrorists manage to sneak explosive devices on the ship disguised as beer kegs. Each has a bar code strip over the window that is used via a remote to trigger the countdown mechanism. |The US Marshall on-board gets suspicious and manages to shoot some of the terrorists before they have a chance to detonate their bombs. So, instead of the ship sinking, which was the plan, it only capsized.
