Nessieldwi Very interesting film. Was caught on the premise when seeing the trailer but unsure as to what the outcome would be for the showing. As it turns out, it was a very good film.
Roxie The thing I enjoyed most about the film is the fact that it doesn't shy away from being a super-sized-cliche;
Fulke Great example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
Cheryl A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
CousinBagunca The Rite fits itself into The Exorcist (1973) sub-genre. When you're in for a movie that's about exorcism, I think it's impossible to not compare it to The Exorcist. The Exorcist spawned a sub-genre followed by many.Though it's basically the same old stuff, this movie does not disappoint. You pretty much know what's going to happen the entire movie (maybe except for the finale, which can choose between a good ending and a bad ending).Anthony Hopkins is great. Not much to talk about him, he's always fantastic.I'd say go for it. At least, you might end the movie wondering about your faith, heh heh heh.
Python Hyena The Rite (2011): Dir: Mikael Hafstrom / Cast: Colin O'Donoghue, Anthony Hopkins, Ciaran Hinds, Alice Braga, Rutger Hauer: Conventional spiritual thriller about the formula for confronting evil and Satan's cunning methods to stray that formula. Colin O'Donoghue plays Michael whose father was a mortician and expects him to follow into the Priesthood. After four years at Catholic university he questions his faith until he is witnessed at an accident dealing with a female upon death. He is sent to Father Lucas who introduces him to a pregnant woman whom claims to be possessed. After witnessing the body twitching and spitting up nails he soon comes to realize that he is there for a reason. Director Mikael Hafstrom is given great shots of Rome as well as a creepy cat infested location. O'Donoghue holds the film together with his dealings with his upbringing, to his questioning of his faith, to his witnessing the bizarre. He will be the stronghold with the ultimate exorcism in the end. Anthony Hopkins does well as Lucas who is an experienced exorcist yet faces failure and weakness. Supporting roles are not all that well rounded. Ciaran Hinds as a Priest professor who hardly interesting, and Alice Braga as a reporter and student is basically a potential romantic prop. Rutger Hauer makes an appearance but how great would it have been to have him in scenes with Hopkins? That would be great casting in a hopefully better film. While the film is well made visually it still feels corny at times and it pales in comparison to The Exorcist, which still remains the very best film of this kind ever made. Score: 6 / 10
Sherin The movie starts slow ... but picks pace ... it is a movie for those who don't believe in God ... to understand things from their perspective ... I loved the movie and how it dealt with questions that modern youth are bound to ask... it would have better if these questions are addressed in more detail .. but actions speak louder than words ... Some things aren't explained clearly ... particularly why the father had to get possessed ... however, the hero rose up to the occasion as always :). This movie reinstates the importance of God and how devil works in cunning ways, even today ... when most think it is a myth! However, am not sure why they had to kill the girl ... and why they were not able to exorcise her!
Dr_Sagan This is a movie that deals with the "delicate" theme of exorcism (i.e. the practice of evicting a demon from a person they are believed to be possessed). I describe it as delicate because it seems very difficult to distinguish a person with a mental illness from someone who is possessed, IF such thing exists at all in real life.In past times, demonic possession was a common belief to explain the abnormal behavior of a person. Even nowadays, when everything else has failed, and the science can't provide a solution, people in some parts of the world still believe in that and seek help to practices of mysticism like exorcisms.In this movie exorcism is presented in conjunction with lost faith. It is inevitable that the non-believer has to see with his own eyes for his faith to be restored.The atmosphere of the movie is eerie from the start. Even before the demons...present themselves! The reluctant hero and the universe that conspires so he can find his way to God, is presented in a solid way.The cast is good. Anthony Hopkins is as excellent as ever. The music helps to establish the theme of the movie and Rome and the Vatican look majestic as ever, maybe the best set to place such a movie.There are some grisly images but you want be scared because of them. The director bets on the atmosphere if not anything else.Overall: Not a great movie, but not bad either. It won't help your faith to become stronger. For that look elsewhere.
