n my opinion it was a great movie with some interesting elements, even though having some plot holes and the ending probably was just too messy and crammed together, but still fun to watch and not your casual movie that is similar to all other ones.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

I saw this film December 2008 with my sister and a friend. I'm pretty sure there were only two other parties in the entire theatre--I think it was opening week too... Nobody really wanted to see this film. I'd seen the trailers and hyped it all up to my unsuspecting companions. This wasn't long after 300 came out, so one might be inclined to think that The Spirit possessed serious cult potential. It didn't. Frank Miller should just stick to the comics. It got to the point where people were openly jeering at the screen, and I think we may have walked out because I honestly can't remember the ending. 2/10.

Plot; A young detective comes back from the dead and takes on the mantle of The Spirit, standing between his beloved city and a maniacal super villain.Writer/Director Frank Miller clearly tries to capture the mojo of Robert Rodriguez's adaptation of his own Sin City and fails in a most spectacular fashion. The Spirit is just an odd film, and while that in and of itself is not a sin (no pun intended), it's still obligated to make sense, and very little about this trippy freak show does. Thanks to a game cast and some occasionally impressive and inspired visuals, it threatens to work despite itself, but by the end I was ready for the whole circus to just leave town.

How anyone could pick Frank "Dismal" Miller to direct one of the gem's of comic's, by a creator, Wil Eisner, whose brilliance in comics so outshines his, is insane. Miller is a terrible director and his attempt to make a movie out of The Spirit, shows. The writing is horrible, the acting is even worse. I won't blame the actors, they need a director and some real screen writing things that are sadly lacking in this farce of a movie. This is terrible from the get go. I'll ignore that we've already seen this type of filming in Sky Captain and 300. So that whole green screen effect isn't all that remarkable. The story is laughable and even Samuel Jackson phones in his performance. I'm wondering if Miller did a deliberately bad job just because as good as he's been - he's no Wil Eisner. I'm surprised because I'd figure that he'd have the proper respect for one of the giants of the industry. I guess I was wrong.

The Spirit is not only one of the worst comic book adaptations of all time, it's one of the worst films of all time. Although the film is striking visually, the lousy script sinks it virtually from the opening credits. It's not only poorly written, it's offensive. Why Frank Miller thought it would be a good idea to put Samuel Jackson in an SS uniform defies comprehension. This film is stunningly bad. Given the source material and the budget, it could have been a classic. What a missed opportunity. Also Gabriel Macht has zero charisma. Casting him is another reason why this movie stinks so bad. Don't bother. And shame on Frank Miller for desecrating this beloved comic strip.
